At the crack of dawn they found Mr. Benny RE74 on shore at Paradise Cove. They put up the zone and called the hotline, and educated all the early morning beach folks.
At 6:44 they spotted another seal foraging offshore, it never landed and they were unable to make an ID.
At 7:55 am they spot a seal going west, passing the reef outside, never landed and could not make an ID. (Unclear if it was the same seal seen an hour before)
At 8:15 am Kevin K arrived and Team Billand updated him on the two seal spotted a little early. They left to check other areas.
When Team Billand returned to Paradise Cove to see if the other seals hauled out, there were no seals. They did notice a small crowd on the rocks to the left of the channel. When they went to check it out they found two seals on the rocks. One was Benny RE74 trying to haul up on the rocks, but people were standing right there. Team Billand had to ask twice for people to move back, and then the seals began to fight, and the people moved. They called the hotline and updated them of the two seals fighting.
Robert was able to find Kevin and he came to help keep the folks back. In the meantime volunteer Karen arrived. The seals kept fighting, Benny wanting to rest and RN14 Kalani wanting to play. Benny was being an old fart. At 11:36 both seals left and went just off shore continuing their battle.
Team Billand left PC and headed to a Leeward Beach and to their surprise on the rocks there were two seals RH32 and RIP RR70 in a shallow pond. Ka'ale above him snoozing. They (Billands) didn't stay long since there were lots of people and the parking area and they didn't want to draw attention to the seals.
Heading out to Ka'ena from the west side they found another two seals (hmmm everyone is doubling up today). They watched for a bit and finally able to ID the female as RL42 by her tag. The male was Ka'ena RO40. Both of them were whooping back and forth, then RL42 moved away from him and he followed her. On the way back both seals were side by side sleeping in peace. L42 is fat, healthy no new wound, no hooks, nice to have her back and Ka'ena is one happy boy.
A little further into the trek they found Lei Ola RH48 she was snug and hidden sleeping all by herself. Barb sat with her for a bit, admiring this sweet strong little girl. As the waves touched her hind flippers she gently sticks the flippers straight out to keep them dry. Very cute!
Oops almost forgot, along with Gayle's check on Rabbit Island she also found RO16 Right Spot today. She is looking quite well. Wonder how long she'll be on the east side?
