Karen checked in from the Mokuleia pup site at 1200 during her shift. Both seals were sleeping at the west end of the zone until about 1230 then they swam for an hour. Nihoa (R912) and PO3 hauled out at the west end of the zone at 1330. Pup nursed for 20 minutes and then both went back to sleep.
Carola and Howard checked in from the Mokuleia pup site after their late afternoon shift. The pup was observed nursing 3 times. The pup was venturing off to the water line alone but would return to Nihoa since she was sleeping. Eventually Nihoa woke up and made her was to the water, pup followed. Mom and pup swam for 45 minutes then returned to the beach for a nap. Nihoa and pup moved further up the beach as the tide rose. It was a busy Sunday afternoon. A total of 24 visitors and an unleashed dog came by the pup site. The dog was immediately put on a leash once Carola and Howard spoke to owners about the seals being present.
