When I got back to Makai Pier at 0950 I found that Duke (RA12) had joined the other two. All would move down to spend the day together. There was no observed interaction, just snoozin'.
On the 0741 Spitting Cave check we found RIP (RR70) doing 7-8 minute dives. Back when he was a kid, SC was a regular stop, but as an adult, with broadened horizons, and
with the discovery of girls, sightings at SC dropped off. I knew it had been a while since I'd seen him there, but when I checked my records I was surprised to see that his last Spitting Cave stop was on 2-23-10.
Team Billand had their whale hats on today, but still managed to find Noa (R6FI) at Maili Pt at 0850. Next they reported Kermit (R4DG) at Wind Sock, at 1055. At 1445 they found Max (R5EW) at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park. At 1539 Barbara called with the report of Makaiwi at Wind Sock, on the beach to the right of the reef. Kermit was still to the left of the reef.

Rob found Kermit at 8:30am, roped him off and stuff. Later we went to check him out afer our Whale Count, and to our SURPRISE, there was Makaiwi, snoozing on shore to the right of Kermit. She is getting so big, fattening up nicely and is getting really green. She was close to the sign, we removed the sign and rope very carefully by pulling it out. Readusted all the signs as Kermit himself was out of the boundary. All was well, educated the folks on shore viewing both seals. Now if you look at the Makaiwi shot with the LUMP in the back ground, you will see it is KERMIT laying there, thats how far apart they were. Originally, Kermit was on his reef, later moved to the shore to stay over night. Makaiwi left on her own with the rising tide. She was so funny, as she rolled into the water, then she got wedged on rocks, flipped on her back, just laying there looking so pretty and relaxed. She then flipped over on her belly and left, MAKING THIS ENOROUS SOUND IN THE WATER. Its a behavior she does while departing, and it is LOUD. I love it...these seals are so special!!!Never know what you'll find around the corner...each day. As Makaiwi says..."BORT!!!" (Its the sound she makes.)
