Checked out the leeward coast and came up with...NOTHING.
Charged down to SWQ and finally found Mr. Kermit, THE FAT DUDE, snoozing alone at Nimtiz, half a mile from Jetty. Then we were at Campbells and found Makaiwi, alone, snoozing. As I was snapping some shots of Makaiwi, out of no where I hear a loud snort!!As I viewed the photo, I realized a second large seal was now in my frame!!! My brains went HOLY SHIT, ITS R018, with his transmitter showing. I tried to focus, with heart pumping out of my ASS, I was sooooo excited. He checked Makaiwi out, she growled, but, they seemed compatible. R018, sniffed Makaiwi's DA KINE, then he got excited, turned the other way as if another seal was around. He galumped to the waters edge, turned to call Makaiwi. She got out of her hole, quickly said,"OK Im coming honey." R018 entered the water, they drove off, kissed briefly and took off. Rob and I persued from a great distance, huffing and puffing. Oh how darling they were, oh how exciting experience. R018 was looking on shore, we thought GREAT, they're gonna come up!!!! Wrong, they kept going. Makaiwi was behind, R018 turned, came back to her, asked if she was ok, and then they disappeared after walking running for about another mile or so. We thought maybe there was a chance they'd end up with Kermit, so we took off for Nimitz. Well, I sat and waited with Kermit, scanning the ocean when there out of no where another seal appears, but, I cant tell WHO. I call Rob, he was with a netter, talking, they both looked. THe netter spotted the seal briefly, then it was gone. Ok, we're done, Kermit remained at Nimitz. Off to feed Brownie the abandoned last dog at Plains. I thought, I should check the beach once more for the heck of it. Look right, look left..NOTHING. I looked down to see BENNY just 15 ft from me. OH MY GOSH!!! We quickly put the signs up and some cones...Holy Shit...What a great day with the critters. And we left benny, alone and snoozing fine. In the tracks of the lifeguards quad. They passed this area at 4:30pm, Benny arrived just after that. Maybe it was the seal I saw passing Kermit....WHO KNOWS. Phew...exciting day.
So fun to hear the story behind the pictures. Wish I'd been there. Thanks Barbara! Diane
