July 19, 2026 Yesterday's News Marilyn's Rabbit Island Update

I had internet issues last night and was unable to send in my Saturday report.

There were eight HMS seen on RI yesterday. It was generally sunny with passing clouds and moderate winds. The wave wash made it difficult to get photos of the seals on the rock flats Lanikai side of LPB. I viewed Rabbit Island from Makai Pier from 12:52 to 2:52 pm.

Out of the Lanikai side of the LPB rock flats was Weaner Unknown 1 (WU1): weaner size, no info on sex, and no tags, so this is probably PO10. Later the seal moved further back on the flats and appeared to be eating something from the tide pools.

Closer to LPB was RH76 Kala and her pup PO13. They moved closer to LPB with RH76 vocalizing. Then PO13 nursed before snoozing.

Even closer to LPB was an Unknown Weaner or Juvenile (UW-J): weaner to juvenile size, light yellow belly, at least two tags. Once this seal rolled over, I lost sight of it.

Direction down from the 1BS was Weaner Unknown 2 (WU2): weaner size, three tags (so PO3 or PO4), not sure about sex.

At 1:18 pm a Weaner Male (WM) hauled out between Middle Cliff and the 3BS: weaner size, two red tags, male belly. This is probably RV70 (former PO5).

Initially alone between the 3BS and SRI was a Juvenile Female (JF): larger juvenile size, female belly and two red tags.

At 2:22 pm, a Sub-adult Female (SF) joined the JF. The SF is almost done molting with just a small patch of old fur on the rear right dorsal. The SF had a light female belly and two red tags.
