09/27/2020 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and Melody.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:40 - 3:15 this afternoon. There were three seal on island today.

On LPB there was an U/M adult size, old coat, male belly and 2 tags. The seal was covered in sand for the majority of the time. It "could" be RG32 but could not be confirmed.

Near the 1BS was an unidentified weaner. Weaner size, light belly, no tags or applied bleaches. Marilyn thinks this might be a female which would make it PO5, but she was not sure.

Near SRI was and unidentified juvenile male (J/M), juvenile size, new coat, light male belly and 2 tags. It could be the same J/M as yesterday.

Melody got a call early this morning that Rocky was back in her old neighborhood. She went to check on her and she was in her secluded cove. She spent most of the morning alone with very few people in the area. Melody mentioned that Rocky's spirit animal he Kolea was there to check her out. Melody stayed for a few hours and Rocky left late morning. As she was swimming away she was feeding on her way out.  I know Melody is thrilled to have her girl back on Oahu.

Team Billand got a surprise this morning when they found RW22 Kolohe at 6:45 am.  He was on lower rocks and looked to have just arrived.  Team Billand hadn't seen him in months, but what makes this a little more interesting is, Kolohe was seen on the east side yesterday by posse pal Paul. He was ID'd by his natural bleach on his side, and he is large, green and looking healthy.

At 7:16 Team Billand spotted Ka'ale foraging and stealing fish in the outfall. At the same time they spotted another seal at a different location, so they left Ka'ale to go check.

When Team Billand got to the other location they found Kawika R407 alone on high shore snoozing on his back. His cookie scare and line scar were visible. He's looking a little grubby maybe he'll molt soon. When they did their recheck around noon he was still there alone high up on shore.

Just before 9 am they spotted Ka'ale swimming by them heading towards tracks.  They finally made

their way there and he had landed with folks all around him taking pictures. They did their best by making a faux zone with rocks. He was fine until the waves got to him and he was on the move. Just before 10 he landed by the guys in a tent fishing. At first they joked about it but when they tossed him a taco that was of concern. Team Billand did their best to educate them about what the seal will eat and what they shouldn't eat. Team Billand headed out shortly after, and when they did a recheck the folks told them Ka'ale left right after they did.

Team Billand went to recheck on Kolohe. When they arrived on site they found little Kalua RL20 was with Kolohe. The line coming out of his mouth and tags were visible. Kolohe was next to him both seals just chilling.  They spotted another seal to the right.

RN14 Kalani was wedged in between the rocks to the right of seal inlet. He was relaxing alone and pretty hard to view, but they got a tag shot.

Just before 2 pm they spotted a seal sleeping high on shore at Nanakai beach. They went over to check and the seal wasn't very cooperative. They think it was Kolohe alone resting. There was a small group there but nobody was bothering him.

Team Billand went back to check on RL20 and Kalani again. This time Kolohe wasn't there but they were thrilled to find RL70 Leina. AND she finished her molt, looking so lovely and clean. She is no longer the little green goblin.  Also both RN14 Kalani and RL20 Kalua were side by side on the rocks.
