08/21/2020 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Today being a state holiday Marilyn was off from work and was able to check out Rabbit Island.

There were 5 seals on RI today.

Seal 1 - was way out on the rock flats left of LPB. The seal was only there for about 15 minutes before it left, probably because of the rising tide.  All Marilyn saw was a bright light belly, could be a weaner and by size it would probably be PO5.
Seal 2 - was alone about 30 Makapuu side of the 1BS near the water line. This is a juvenile seal with two tags, and older coat with a lot of green on the belly.
Seal 3 - was initially behind a waterfront rock about 20 feet left of 3BS, but about 12:30 entered the water and hauled out about 20 feet right of the 3BS. This is also a juvenile with two tags and an older coat, but not as green as Seal 2.
Seal 4 - initially this seal was alone on the rock flats behind SRI. This seal appears to be an adult with a new coat and possibly a female belly. About 11:22, Seal 5 hauled out to Seal 4.
Seal 5 - N11 applied bleach, adult size, older coat, darker male belly and 2 tags. This is RG32 by the applied bleach.

Other seals on Oahu started with Ka'ale at the outfall. He was up to his usual bad boy behavior by stealing fish. He was doing 5 minute dives. One of the fishermen had a photo of seal barking at him when he missed the fish he was trying to steal. Of course it was none other than RH32 Ka'ale.

RF28 Paakea was seen on lower rocks, arguing with another seal who departed before an ID could be gotten. RF28 also has a new injury to his left side near his natural bleach. Nothing serious, he will be fine.

The big news of the day came with a sighting of RK72 Kekoa Alii. He hauled up to right of water front rocks. He most likely the one arguing with RF28. He is looking good, a little slim but just fine. He was ID'd by the stub of a tag, scar on right of his face and bumps on his left side of back.

Last there was RG28 Lefty who almost got away unnoticed. He was behind the rocks on mid rocks, he was snoozing on his side.
