11/5/2017 Monk Seal Dailies (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Point & Camp Erdman Finds

Went down early to CE Pt to check on the overnighted kids.
Found RW02 “PVKauai” – is molt is starting to show more on the sides now. It’s impossible to say Day # of the molt. Since he hasn’t turned over to show and it looked like he was shedding more than molting for several days.

From there I saw a seal down in front of CE’s pool. I headed over to CE and down the beach. RR70 “Rip” was in a waterline wallow. He hasn’t moved much the last +4 days and looks a little skinny. We’ll still be keeping an eye on him.

I set out to KPt with Cat (a friend), we passed volunteer Jay on her way back. She told me about the green seal she saw on her way in this morning, at 10 Minutes Beach with tags and a big scar on the back. The seal swam around for a while then left.

When I arrived @ BG’s Pool / KPt there was the green seal with the big scar and 2 tags. It’s our girl R8HE
First documented @ Ka’ena Pt in Feb24/25,2014 she became Temp 400. In April 2014 she was tagged 8HE/F and bleached V11 on Kauai. She may be originally from Niihau or beyond.

Next, we found RO40 “Ka’ena” at the entrance of his pool. He still has the feather and line in the corner of his mouth.
Back Beach was seal free, so we had a nice dip in the refreshing cool water. We headed back and found the 4 seals in the same locations.

That scar on R8HE looks just like the one on Makaiwi I think. Is there any chance that is her?

R4DF "Makaiwi" was wounded in Sep 2013.
R8HE was wounded in Oct 2016.
On both occasions the Billands looked over the seals for days, weeks until they healed doing great documentation.
You can find it all on the blog.
Mahalo for always being with us from so far 🌺
Aloha, Lesley
