8-19-11 DB Dailies

Once again my day began at 0530 along side Rocky near 2C, in Waikiki. This time she had the decency to depart at 0708. Thank You to Karen and Becky, once again.

Dera ruined my night with a call at 1839 this evening reporting that Rocky had just hauled out again. (aww Dera is just the messenger... it's all Rocky's fault). Thankfully, Colleen is handling. She just advised me that she will also take care of the morning. I grovel at your feet Colleen ! She will probably need support folks, so step up if you can.

With Rocky leaving early, and the early shifts covered at the Irma site, I finally had time to check my usual route, and spend more time with the Rabbit Island crew. Today's RI cast all hauled out together at 1046, to the right side rocks of Seal Rock Inlet. Kolohe (RW22) was in the lead. His D#6 molt is 90%. Behind him came Duke (RA12), and hot on his hind flippers came Nani (RK60). All snoozed the day away.

Reports from the early shift said that there was lots of activity with Irma &; Pup, moving down to the tide pool area and doing feeds, and apparently spending most of the day there. I stopped by midday and they were both snoozin' in the tide pool. The 4-7 volunteer was called to work, and couldn't make it so I took the shift. Irma and pup were on the rock flats, and weren't doing much until the moved to the sand at 1830. The kid did a good feed from 1845 until 1917. Then settled into snooze mode. I called it a day at 1930.

I noticed yesterday that the kid had another small natural bleach on his left hind flipper, in addition to the one already documented on the right hind flipper. Tonight I finally lucked out and got a shot of both.

Both Diane Gabriel and Vera Cober sent R5AY&Pup shots from TB today. Thank you Diga & Helga !! Diane reported that two fishermen, who had no clue there was a Mom and Pup there, until R5AY told them. They ran like the wind when she spoke! Judging by the shots it looks like they spent alot of time outside the pool.

I was just having some thoughts on the Rocky situation in Waikiki. What if ya all set up a booth like you do in the parks and malls...this way you have a real class room session with visitors and locals. You can educate all right there on shore, what a perfect place to educate all. Your subject is there before you. You can also bring up the funding for the hospital in Kona, show photos of the entanglement issues, the problems in the NWHI. Teach the beach goers out there all about our Precious Seals that are struggling to survive and how they can be of help when they see a seal hauling out. What do you think?

Might not need a booth, but a good opportunity for some outreach.
