8-11-2012 DB's Dailies:

At 0630 I found Ewa Girl (RS00) at Left Middle Cliff, Rabbit Island. A rather large Oooops !!! is required here. On 8-5 & 8-6 I reported Sadie at that location . I now believe that it was Ewa Girl all along. Today most certainly was EG. What threw me off on an ID was that Sadie was the only molted female I was aware of, however an afternoon conversation with Dera, confirmed that Eileen had reported a molting animal at the Reef Runway on Aug 1&2. WOT??? Ewa Girl mistaken for Sadie?  just kidding DB.... But what is interesting as it seems, Ewa Girl, and Irma took the year off from having a little one.... and has anyone seen 5AY?  She should be with a pup now, unless she too took the year off.  This only means next year could be cRaZy.

At 0720 I found Buster (RV08) doing 7 minute dives at Spitting Cave. He was still there on by 1500 recheck.

Gayle reported Kaiwi (RK96) and Buster together at Spitting Cave, initially playing near the big rock, but rounding the corner headed in an east direction shortly thereafter.

Gayle called at 1155 with the report of Kaiwi at Lanai Lookout.

Today was Kaiwi's 1st Birthday !!!

At 1020 I found Duke (RA12) to the right of the Last Greenery, at the extreme east end of Rabbit Island. Animals are only rarely seen at that location. He was approximately 60 ft left of the rabbit's nose.

At 1522 Aukai (RL12) finally came into view at Rocky Right Beach, on RI.

Marilyn and Lesley did the Ka'ena Point trek today, after a morning R912 & Pup stint. They reported Ka'ena (RO40), Kerby (RW08), and an U/U at the end of the world.

Vera Cober called at 1708 with the report of Rocky (RH58) and Benny (RE74) together near Access 185B, Ewa Beach.

Dana called at 1739 to report that Pohaku (RO28) had been at Secret Beach all day. She departed at 1630. Thank You to Linda,Gerry&Jan, and Andrea for being there.

At 1742 Dana reported RIP (RR70) & M&M (R020) at Maili Point.

Ewa Girl Grand Madam on Rabbit Island.... it's been a while since she was back on the island.
  Kerby and Ka'ena @ Ka'ena Point
 KA'ENA !  Yo Kerby!!!
 U/U  wonder who?
U/U could it be someone new?
Pohaku @ Secret Beach, thank you Jan Dill for helping out and giving Barbara peace of mind ;-)
Oh she looks beautiful with her new coat
And we have Rocky and Benny Boy @ Maili

Who are you? And what are you referring to?

Aloha Surfer from Haleiwa,
I went back into my journal and read what went on Mon, Tues, and wed.

Mon according to my notes...
Our dear volunteer Linda reported Pohaku at her spot near trees at 5:40am. She roped off seal for the am session of snoozing.

Rob and I got a call on our way to Pohaku, of two seals Plains. 6:38am Found Rip with M and M. Roped and signed seals off, educated who ever came by.
No other seals found.
8:11am Back to KoOlina Secrets..R028 still snoozing, poop near by. Called Tracy if she wanted poop for science...YES!!
9:30am Pohaku starts her stretching and movement out of her "BEDROOM" the tree area. We watch and monitor, adjusting ropes as seal approaches her "Patio" area to waters edge. WE ecucated those that saw what was going on and to keep back till we figure what the seals movement is. Be patient.
Seal moved around 200 feet out of Bedroom area now..adjusted ropes and signs. By now, since we are afraid of ropes coming down, we used cones for the entry and exit area for safety reasons. Seals love to explore signs and ropes.
1:30pm Called Linda to relieve us. Need to check on M and M and Rip at Plains. Secure ropes and signs. Linda was happy to keep an eye out for Pohaku till our return.
After recheck, found seals left Plains, collected equipment. Took a break for lunch and some air conditioning. Made another search, still, no other seals.
4:19pm Recheck on Pohaku. All is good, Linda with her still.

We REMAINED on site till 8pm...no other volunteers came at all. We did what we could, just Linda, Rob and Me. DAILY for 14 days straight, at times taking 14 hour shifts...14 hours at KoOlina with one seal...

Maybe you entered scene while we took our much needed breaks from the heat...
Any ways, we are out there, and its blazing hot...BLAZING HOT. We do try to stay till 8pm or till most of the crowd is gone for the day.

All I can say is if you want to volunteer go to hmsrto.org and you can become a caretaker. If you are referring to Mom & Pup, looking back on the calendar, 3 out of 4 shifts were covered Mon, Tues, Wed, with spot checks on the late shift by Hannah who goes out several times a week and takes on the pukas. We can always use the help. Mahalo for your concern.

I refer to mom and pup.
I never saw any caretaker any of the days I went. My friends had been there too many times and mentioned not seeing noone.
We thought it would be like Laniakea that have turtle volunteers watching out all the time.
Sadly there are some people who are not that friendly towards nature.

Who is manning the site? Maybe somebody should tell NOAA?

Thank you for your input. I know there is a schedule for volunteers and the HMSRTO response coordinator is handling the volunteers and making sure the mom and pup are being looked after. I will make sure Dana gets your message, perhaps you can send her an email directly and help her narrow down these times, as it's my understanding someone is suppose to be out there. You can reach Dana at sealsonthebeach@gmail.com
