9-25-11 Sunday North Shore News

Aloha Good People!  We have a late report from Sunday on the North Shore from Kelly Girl. Below is Kelly's account for her time watching over La'akea RK82. Seems like crappy crabs like hanging out with weaners.... lol. Thank you Kelly Girl.

We also HAVE yesterday's news from Vera showing La'akea RK82 hanging out, right spot beginning her molt.... and lots of trash along the beach in Kahuku.... might be time for another clean up adventure.

Aloha, It was a beautiful sunny sea breezy day on the North Shore at Turtle Bay. I arrived around 1300 at the Keiki Pool and by time I actually got to SPZ III it must have been 1320. I was stopped along the way out to the zone by tourist and locals alike asking about the seals. Other than that it was a pretty quiet day at SPC III with only about 11 visitors between 1320 and 1830.
I heard from Pat that La'akea had ventured out of the zone and swam to McKenzie's pool and back then out again and back. First shift reported to Pat that La'akea had found a huge sea cumumber. Most of the time I watched La'akea as she slept, moved around a bit, then slept, then headed towards the water to cool off. then up to sleep. She hugged a rock or two then slept while this huge crab came out of it's hole and circled her a few times as she slept.
Around 1715 as I was looking through binoculars at La'akea I saw a seal head pop up in the water behind her as she was sleeping. It popped up and looked right at her then swam off towards Mckenzie's. I practically fell out of my chair then, I tried to follow to get a picture but the unidentified seal swam straight out to the surf not revealing much of anything. I could not tell which seal it was. Just a quick head and a quick tail not long enough to get a picture.
At 1815 La'akea move high up into the grass and was playing with a 1 foot skinny twig that she would flip up into her mouth and then try and swallow it she actullay had it pretty far down her throat with her head extended up in the air. Then she would pop it back out. It was like she was try to down a fish? She then would chew on it as if she was teething? She was sneezing alot today but as the sunset she did not have any desire to head into the water for any evening foraging. She was on high on the beach in the grass when I left. It got dark fast about 1830 so I took down the rope on the left side of the zone and scadaddled out of there. Just another great seal day in paradise. me ke aloha, kelly girl

Yesterdays news from Vera.... a couple of great shots of  La'akea and a molting Right Spot.... then some unfortunate pictures of trash.

The expression on her face is great.  Also aren't these foot steps a little close? Hoping they were there when she hauled up to that area.
