9-6-11 LATE ENTRY - Turtle Bay and Action Video Camp Irma

Just in.... received a couple of pictures from Auntie Karen Rohter @ turtle bay.... one shot of La'akea shows her with her new coat and color... very healthy young'en. Karen's 2nd photo is the filming of "Myth Buster" television show (one of my favs)... apparently they were testing out a duct tape boat!.....

And to follow Karen's North shore report... Auntie Diga got some video of the Camp Irma drama today... Diane said the quality isn't that great for she was worried about the pup... Apparently Benny doesn't know the meaning of "get the hell out of here"!  Enjoy!!!

Oh my gosh, I am sitting on the edge of my seat, having a STROKE, watching this fantastic footage of the encounter with Benny. He is a persistant jerk. But its what nature is in the wild and ya all done good in capturing this excellent event. I am having a second stroke with the poor pup in the action. I see Irma doing her best as a mom to protect her pup Kaiwi, fighting Bennys advances. I also see one moment as if Benny is getting IRma, holy crap!!! I am a wreck!! Poor Pup, not knowing what the hell is going on. Benny has been on vacation for a long time after his molt, but seems he got his manly ways back, my heart is pumping so fast watching...what an adventure of the Hawaiian Monks. Totally fantastic footage!!! Was the pup ok?? Was it hurt in any way. Did she have scratches?? She was right in the thick of things. Ok, I need a drink, maybe two...and I need to watch this over and over to see every step of this outstanding coverage with Kaiwi, Irma and THE BENNY. He always makes a dramatic entry, no matter where he goes. Horny ass. He met up with Irma last September 7th at makaha, but Kermit was also present and the same kind of action here went on at Makaha, minus the pup. Thank you Diga...Thank you for bringing this to the blog, it is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, absolutely amazing footage Diane - and so difficult to watch. Thank you for sharing! Not sure if this Benny at his best or Benny at his worst. Is the pup ok?

Ka’iwi seemed to handle the encounter with Benny ok. I couldn’t see any injuries. Most of the action took place over 30 minutes and quite often the pup was between Irma and Benny and I was terrified something would happen to her. I was trying so hard to keep the camera still but I noticed my hand was shaking from the tension of the moment. Benny was there about 2 ½ hours total.

This all started after the pup, just finishing a feed, moved down to the waters edge while Irma was up on shore watching her. I had just updated the log and I looked up and saw Irma lunging with mouth open. Then I saw Benny near the pup. Irma was able to chase him off pretty quickly and he went a short distance away to regroup. Then Irma took the pup out a bit into the water to float facing away from Benny, which made no sense to me. The first video shows Benny coming back from the first encounter as he spots them floating in the water. Two of DB’s pictures show a point when the pup was safely out of the way while Irma and Benny go at it. The pup is calling out to her mom and then jumps back into the water and action again. I was beside myself with worry for the pup. Her need to be near her mom at this time seems stronger than her self preservation instinct. Every time Irma would go after Benny the pup was right there with her and got in the middle of the action many times. I hope he doesn’t keep showing up but as Barb says, he is persistent.

Benny may show up again. He does that and he will fight any other male to the draw for Irma. I seen it many times at Plains and Makaha. Seems Sept is for Irma and Benny and poor old Kermit.
And the same went on at Reef Run Way with Ewa Girl and Rip PLUS T21M showed up for some too. And Ewa Girl was nursing Kekoa, which didnt matter to Rip at all. Kekoa went in the water too. Good luck ....

Diane, extremely tense video. On the edge and so worried. If the pup behavior mimics what we see on NWHI footage, the pup just follows the Mom no matter where she goes for whatever reason. That's how the sharks get them in some of the footage we have seen. That pup is a good little fighter though. WOW is all I can say. Irma is such a good protector. Might be good footage to show the public on how agressive and protective a HMS Mom can be. I know it was a mixed blessing for you to have to witness, but how lucky are we to have had you there doing your usual great video and footage of an event such as this.
