Marilyn, Ken and I did the Ka'ena Point hike and seal monitoring today.
Our first find was RW30 Molokai girl sleeping peacefully on some reefs at the entrance of Ka'ena's Pool.
At the point the real adventure started RO40 "Ka'ena" was hauled out on the reefs at the entrance of the Main Pool, suddenly we noticed a second seal trying to haul out with him it took us a while but we finally IDed RW22 "Kolohe". We walked around to the far side reefs and noticed that RW02 "Kauai PV" was between both seals.
RW02 was adamant that RW22 was no way going to haul out on the reefs with them. RW22 "Kolohe" tried several times and finally gave up and swam away hauling out on some reefs 1/4 of the way towards the Runway side.
In the meantime RO40 "Ka'ena" started nagging RW02 "Kauai PV". They ended up in the water. Suddenly we noticed a third player in the game. They went out to some outer reefs and played in deep waters and big waves. After ~30 minutes they all came back and entered the Main Pool - that's when we were able to ID the third player as RW08 "Kerby". We watched them for the longest time. RO40 "Ka'ena" surprised us today with a rascal behavior, he, that's usually the first seal to move away or stand on the side lines watching, was the one nagging, biting and teasing.
On our way out we stopped at birth beach and there hauled out was little RN58 "Luana" sleeping. Trails on the beach showed that she had been up and down the beach.
It was a exceptional fun sealing day ! Today I opted to share my photos in a video Aloha, Lesley
