HMMA Update from August 29th

At 0708 a report came in about a seal at Maili Beach Park. Chrissy responded and searched the beach but there was no sign of a seal. At 0803 a report came in about a seal at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Steve responded and found Kaiwi (RK96). ID made by tags. Steve provided some outreach to the lifeguards. Kaiwi departed at 1318. Diane checked in at 0956 with a report of Ka'ale (RH32) at the Mokuleia birth beach. Diane checked back in at 1047 with a report of BG (R303). Jennifer checked in at 1154 with a report of Kawena (RH36) at Alan Davis. Kawena was observed sleeping. At 1739 Carola checked in with a report of BG. She moved just past the Kaena Point parking lot.

Diane checked in via email from Mokuleia. At 0935, Diane found Ka'ale (RH32), ID by tags H32/33. Ka'ale was safe in the rocks just east of his birth beach. At 1030, Lesley pointed out another seal that had hauled out to birth beach. It was a molting BG (R303). She looks approximately 70-75% molted. ID by cc scar above right nipple. Carola checked in via email after her sunset shift at Mokuleia.

Carola found Ka’ale on the rocks next to his birth beach snoozing. She walked past the Ka’ena Point parking lot, about 18 minutes in she found BG (R303) asleep. She is almost done molting, only her shoulder area and parts of her head left to go. Carola was getting ready to depart the site when she looked back she saw 2 kids right next to BG. They immediately reacted to Carola waving and walked over to Carola. They thought BG was not doing well and needed help. Carola spent some time doing some outreach and explained the annual molting process. They were both interested and appreciative of all the info.
