12-8-2012 Team Billand

RI37 @ Secret Beach
Apparently this group of divers has total disregard to respecting Hawaii's wild life. I hate to think what they are capable of when no one is looking. Shame!  Team Billand I applaud your ability to keep your cool during times like this. I hope you were able to file an incident report.
Clearly RI37 reacting to this guy
He sees her reacting and yet he still continues.
 For Shame!
Finally she can get some rest.
 Kermit @ Kermit's Reef
Now I applaud these fishermen.... pulled their line up and took there photo from afar. (I hope my interpretation of this photo is correct. I am sure Barb will fill us in.)
There you go Kermit the old heave ho

Yes, the fishermen were so kind enough to wait for Kermit to do his foraging for over an hour and a half. We all watched as he swam from the Jetty, to the cove, come close to shore, look, moved on and repeated this behavior. But we all had a great conversation in the mean time, some seal 101...it was fun and we were happy we met THE FISHERMEN. In the end, Kermit landed to the left and the Fishermen started up their poles once again...all is so good. THANK YOU FISHERMEN!!

We went to simply remove the signs from last night at Secrets. But when we got to site, THERE WAS I37 fast asleep, IN THE PERIMETER STILL. That means she overnighted. So..we readjusted the poles, didnt put out the ropes as just then more than five divers began coming up in THE MIDDLE OF THE ZONE. Ok, here we go, thinking all would move out and leave. NO..why they all decided to enter the area, WITH THE SEAL RIGHT THERE, SLEEPING, IS BEYOND US.

When the first man came a shore, he was taking off his flippers, so we warned him of the seal. He got up, flung his fins up shore. The others followed, the same man got the flippers again, FLUNG IT AT I37nearly, HITTING HER. What is his problem? We warned group again, WATCH OUT FOR SEAL!!! Now everyone of the divers are walking close to seal, we're going what the hell is going on???? The man with the tattoo around his neck then gets his spear, takes the fish from it, flies the fish to I37 who jumps up, barks. We all yell at the guy. He begins to walk up to I37, spear in hand and we are frightened, what is his next step here. He goes right up to I37, she pumps up, roars at the guy as he gets his stupid fins. Seal is clearly angry, frightened, it was total wild. All standing next to seal, walking by her, like they just didnt care about I37's presence at all. We called Security..they took for ever to come..and when they did, nothing, NOTHING WAS DONE, just a talk and they both left. And the divers never left area, they sat and had lunch with family under the tree. THEY NEVER LEFT.

What the hell are we supposed to do here????? We tried our damdest to get all to move away, they didnt. At this spot, its a very small beach, we realized that, but to totally disreguard our pleas, disturb a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SEAL as they done...MEAN and DISRESPECTFUL.

Linda S. came in to replace us, we filled her in. God bless her coming and staying to guard our Lovely...innocent..I37. Who almost took off with all the commotion and disturbence.

We are sickened by these humans behavior and disreguard. Usually divers, will go in the middle but leave immediately...not these folks. Shame on all of you guys...why did this happen??? Why can man be so arrogant? Its a Hawaiian Monk Seal before them, and they didnt give a RATS ASS!!!! AND NOTHING WAS DONE..THAT IS EVEN WORSE!!!! !#$!*!!!!!!!!!! TOO BAD I DIDNT CAPTURE THE MAN TOSSING HIS FINS AT THE SEAL...WE NEVER EXPECTED THAT. And the tossing of the fish???? That really added fire to the incident. BAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Hi Barb,
I think it's a perfect situation for you to call NOAA as well as DOCARE. Based on the photos and your description, you should complete an incident report. The OLE (office of law enforcement) might be interested in this. Give Dera or David a call in the morning.
