12-3-2012 DB's Dailies

There were lots of miles on the Irma Quest, but alas, no Irma. There was , however lots of other action in the Monk Seal world.

At 0728 I found M38, still rotting near the 1BS on Rabbit Island. His D#9 molt is 50%.
Also at 0728 I found Kaiwi (RK96), at Rocky Right Beach once again. Because this is her first molt so is not so ragged looking as M38. Her D#6 molt is 70%

At 0904 Duke (RA12) would haul out to join Kaiwi for the day. Unfortunately they moved down behind the water front rocks, and were only visible from the Makapuu Overview. RI shooting conditions were horrendous so once again the shots suck.

At 0740 to my surprise I found T21M snoozin' at Kaupo Beach Park, totally visible from the highway. I got him cordoned off and he has remained all day. His last visit to my neighborhood in the SE Quadrant was way back on 1-9-12 when Lesley found him in Portlock. The next day he was in Aina Haina. I picked up the rope at dark. T21M remains.

Posse member Kathy called at 1049 to report a quicky drive by at Spitting Cave. The U/U swam by heading more into Maunalua Bay. Gayle volunteered to do the Kokee Flats trek, and called at 1149 with an animal just hauling out to the flats, near Irma's Grotto. When I arrived at 1205 I found Rocky (RH58).

Team Billand checked in at 0845 with the report of Kermit (R012) fronting #1707, White Plains. He departed on his own at 1730.

At 0929 they found Ewa Girl (RS00) at Wind Sock. The Billands reported a guy and his dog walked right up to her, and she departed at 1800.
At 1005 the Billands found Pohaku (RO28) at Paradise Cove. She would depart at 1657.
The real highlight of the my day began at 1005 with a called from Ocean Safety (Lifeguards) reporting a small seal at Yokes. I called the Billands and when they finished with Pohaku they responded to Yokes. There at the very end, where you park to begin the KP trek from the west side they found RL42 !!! She has been MIA for a while now, last being seen at Ka'ena Point on 11-17-12. There was a "maybe" sighting at Makua the other day, but it could not be confirmed.

Lesley called at 1544 to advise that she and Diga had trekked many a mile , checking beaches from Kualoa to Turtle Bay. They were getting transmitter data from Dera but never saw R5AY at any of the locations that the transmitter provided. She theorized that R5AY was probably foraging just off shore. Dera said end of day data showed her in the Malaekahana area.

Though Lesley and Diga never saw R5AY, they did run on to La'akea (RK82) and brand new coated, little sister RL54 together at the elbow, Turtle Bay.

When I read or hear the SISTERS are living together in peace and harmony, I think, R5AY was smart in giving birth at Turtle Bay. Isnt that remarkable??? Momma knows best, where her little ones should be brought up at. That is so cool, to KNOW, what neighborhood your pups will be ok at. I mean the two sisters can explore together, snooze on shore in many areas, far from HUMANS.

I know all seals will get into trouble now and then with a hooking...such as MOMMA, R5AY, but..its just really smart thinking.

Looking at the dailys or the blog and seeing SISTERS out there sharing lifes experiences...PRICELESS. I often wonder, if HOKU was left out there at Crawfords...would he have found a spot to hide and play???? A spot no humans to bug him??? Just a thought. Photos are just darling.

Thanks to all the volunteers awesome shots of two sisters...I enjoy reading about them.

Now if only R5AY can survive her ordeal with the hooking..Life will be...AWESOME again.
