At 0732 I found M38, 70 ft left of 2BS, and Kaiwi (RK96) up in the grass behind Seal Rock Inlet, on Rabbit Island. Both would remain all day.
Gayle called at 1235 with the report of Rocky (RH58) on the Kokee Flats, basically in Linda's backyard.
At 0742 Team Billand reported Makaiwi (R4DF) on the beach between Tower#1 and the fence line. She would later relocate to Tower#2.
At 0941 the Billands found Pohaku (RO28) at Secret Beach, KoOlina.
Dana called at 1010 to advise that RI37 was once again at Azlina's house in Laie.
Team Billand reported Kermit (R012) at Kermit's Reef at 1213.
At 1524 the Billands found Irma (R010) near Access #187A, Ewa Beach.
At 1706 Team Billand found a 50% molted Benny (RE74) at Yokes.
Dera called at 1714 with a couple of pieces of info. First of all RL54 was seen at Turtle Bay, no doubt under her tree, but I don't know that for a fact yet.
The other piece of info was much more distressing. Information is tentative at this writing, but apparently R5AY was entangled in lay net this afternoon in the Laie Point area. I'm told she freed herself, and entangled again. A Laie resident, as well as a DOCARE officer were apparently on the scene disentangling her. Volunteers Sandra and Hannah were also were on the scene. Tracy was also responding. I'm awaiting photos. Hopefully, more specific information will develop, so stay tuned. The bottom line is that R5AY is free, and Tracy is said to be picking up the net. Thank you Sandra and Hannah for being on it! Please... as soon as anyone has information that can be shared, let us know. I can not believe what this seal has been through in the last month.... THANK YOU Sandra, Hannah... DOCARE and the resident that helped out...

Makaiwi does look like a Lady now, not just a little girl any more. As for being Hapai??? Well, only the NOAA would know that, but, if I can put my TWO CENTS in, I'd say the kid is getting quite PLUMP. Oh I wish she is pregnant, we could use another FEMALE pup to cheer everyone up. I wished I could have just sat with her yesterday, but we had to find other seals and protect them as well.
We have watched Makaiwi from this little, scrawny green female,GROW up. We first met her at HAU BUSH in EWA. She was so tiny, green, we were quite concerned for her. But...look how lovely a seal she is NOW. She still got the same mannerisms, silly, toss and turn, but now with a more matured look. And that belly is nice and wide...HMMMM.
We were surprised to find her at the Tower 2, before we left, we roped her off at Tower One. Hmmm. Guess we know what happened huh? And when we came back, she was being visited by teens, with loud voices, hoping to see her move. We tried to educate and teach some respect...all seals deserve RESPECT.
Now, to R5AY...oh my goodness, ENTANGLED, TWICE!!!! In a lay net. Who knows why a seal will even attempt to take a fish from a net, HUNGRY? We know she was hooked, nearly died, had a major surgery to remove 1/3 of her tongue. Released her, recaptured to check her out. And now the LAY NET incident..HOW TRAGIC a story of our Beloved R5AY. This seal has so much history of tradgedies, with her two earlier pups, dying in two lay nets..Her other pup, now grown, RI37, hit by a prop, loses three of HER PUPS...WHY??? WHY cant this poor female Monk Seal have a better quality of LIFE??? God bless her, hope she can survive all this CRAP.
Prayers to you R5AY and thanks to those angels who found her and released her. TO the team out there, trying to keep her safe, trying to see if she is .... ok.
