6-4-2012 DB Dailies: Kerby @ Maili Pt / Pohaku @ Guard Rails, Team Billand

I arrived at Irma's at 0545, to find Irma (R010) waiting for me right where I'd left her last night. She had obviously overnighted. I redid the cordon and continued the adventure. Posse member Kathy called at 1149 to advise that Irma was gone. I went over and picked up the stuff. I did not see Irma again today.

Posse member Gayle called at 0725 to report that Kaiwi (RK96) had also overnighted, and was at Lanai Lookout. I spent a few minutes with her in the morning, and returned at 1439. Kaiwi would leave at 1445 when the rising tide got to her.
At 1116 Buster (1421) hauled out 80 ft right of 3BS. He would later relocate to the left end of the beach at Rabbit Island , where he remained the rest of the day.

Lesley checked in at 0729 with the report of T21M, who had also overnighted at Kawela Bay. She would call again at 1426 to advise that T21M had departed middayish.

Team Billand called at 0914 with the report of Kerby (RW08) at Maili Point.

Next the Billands reported Pohaku (R028) at Guard Rails Beach. She was run off by a dog.

Dera called at 1153 with a report from Eileen at the Reef Runway of Kekoa (RK72) at that location. The early shift had also reported that Kekoa and an UU adult animal had been there at 0600.

In the "Yesterday's News" department, photos were received from Larry Stamey, documenting Ka'ena (RO40) and Noa (R6FI) at Ka'ena Point yesterday. Thank You Larry & Jean.

We had passed early on and didnt see Pohaku at the spot, but, on our afternoon check she was right there for all to see from the road. We went around, came back and we were shocked it was Pohaku who been vacationing nearly every day at KoOlina. We put out just one sign to make folks aware, she was there and not to go close. All were great. Kids behaved, no troubles here at all.
And the whole time we were out there, we watched tons of firetrucks barreling down the highway to a HUGE, HUGE Brush fire at Lualualei area. Pohaku would jump now and then when the trucks blared the sirens and horns. Quite dramatic. The sun was being blocked from the smoke, making the sunset so spectacular.
Surfers went around Pohaku, very respectable.
THEN: THE DOG ENTERS THE PICTURE.
It was quiet, Pohaku snoozing her heart away, Kids being educated...Here comes the lady and her dog ON A LEASH. THAT DOG CHARGED ROBERT AND THE KIDS IN SECONDS, THE DOG TRIED TO BITE THEM ALL. It was so scarey...for some reason, the six month old dog went ballistic. The kids stayed behind Robert...The lady pulling on the dog's leash to get him back. FINALLY..lady pulled the dog off, took him to the bench and tied him up there...Holy crap...Mean while, Poor Pohaku jumped up, rolled off the shore, running in the water..the kids so unhappy, the dog made her run off. All that growling, all that barking, sent Pohaku on her way.
Rob talked to the lady, about what can happen with DOG AND SEAL..she listened. Thank heavens she had the dog on a leash...that saved seal, and the kids.
We watched Pohaku leave, the sun was almost set, the fire was raging out of control still, the sky was totally dark with smoke..
And Kerby was no longer at his spot, Dont know when or why he left. Day is done..all is well..ready for TOMORROW!!!

Barbara - Thank you so much for being on the front lines every day! I know there are sometimes situations that aren't very safe. I'm so glad that everyone is ok - hopefully Pohaku found a quieter and more peaceful spot to sleep undisturbed. VERY glad you were able to talk to the dog owner. It's not just for the seal, but her dog's safety too. Most people get that - I hope she did! Stay safe over there with all the fires!

Thanks Rachel S. appreciate that!!!
Another wild fire today, the third one this week. Its just terrible one finds, setting land on fire is fun. It is so dangerous, coming close to homes at times, also destroying the homes of our many critters...birds that nest.

We did have a brush fire the other day at Nimitz Beach too, but the fire department got to it pretty fast.
Dogs are a big problem out at Nimitz, Windsock and other areas. Owners love to take the dogs to the beach...except, the beach is NOT A DOG PARK..its a beach. And, not all folks pick up after the dogs bussiness...that sucks.
We always talk to the owners if the seal is out there, most are really good about leashing the dog..but there are some that no matter what you tell them..their dog is a smart dog and they wont bother that seal...but..they do. And when they do run up to that seal, our hearts are pounding with fear!!!
Again, thanks R.S.....B
