6-9-2012 Team Billand West Side Update

Kerby @ Maili
 Noa and Kerby
 two buddies hanging out
 Noa
 Benny @ KoOlina (Disney)
Benny looking to see if Mickey has arrived?
 Great shot....
 Benny moves to secret beach
 RO28 Pohaku @ Makaha
Here's one of those situations.... looks like everyone is too close....  (I wasn't there so I am just going by what appears to be in the photo)....  but we have a seal peacefully asleep, and a bunch of kids having some fun.  Both seem to be doing what they are suppose to be doing without interfering with the other. To me a perfect picture of co-existence.
I just hope that is how the story played out.... and RO28 remained undisturbed.

Benny decided to plop his mid sized body at KoOlina, fronting Disney Hotel from 6:30am to 8:30am. Linda Stenton was on it and just so happened to see Benny near the area that the people feed fish, then move to the area they have their canoe parked. The canoe was scheduled for a tourist ride, but being THE BENNY was sleeping in front of it..was held back for the am ride. The people came out like they usually do, saw the seal and went..Oh Oh.
Benny was never really a sleep on shore. I could see him peeking, one eye opened, the other shut. He snorted, went on his side, the other side..as if discusted he cant really sleep here with all the people. By 8:30, he looked at everyone, went at a slow galump, out to the lagoon, made one last pass, looking..with an attitude, then left lagoon for good. Linda later found Benny at 9am Secret Beach, on the rocks. Linda and security got the seal roped and signed off. Good Job guys. thanks.
We came from Maili area after finding Kerby, trying to stay on his favorite spot, but being tossed about with the waves. Didnt stay long, got the call from Linda, THE BENNY IS BACK!!

At secret Beach, we met the most nicest folks today, all very respectful and kept behind the ropes. ONe man in particular sat WITH US observing THE BENNY. He was from Chicago and thought Benny was so cool. He thought what we were doing was great and we filled him in on his questions. Really a good man. By 10am Linda had to leave...but she done such a great job this morning, THANKS LINDA!!! Next was Allen R. who took the next watch..god bless you too Allen. And after Allen, Andrea took the last shift..and Benny would leave at 4:30pm per Andrea...Equipment placed in bushes, we came and took care of the equipment for security.

HPD officer Kiawe called with report a seal with tags 028 on the reef at Makaha, near Beals or Patricks Pond. I grew up in area, so I knew where. Getting there would take time, so I called Dana who called Debbie out. She lives just a moment from the haul out spot. When we got there..two ladies were at Pohaku's site, being respectful and not bothering her. But when I turned to leave, there came lots of locals to play in the Beals Pond...tried to educate all best as possible. One kid went OH HOWS IRMA and KERMIT. His Aunt turned to him and said..HOW COME YOU KNOW THE NAMES OF THE SEALS???? He said, he met us and the seals at Plains where the two seals always go. I explained to the young boy about the seals..I was happy the boy knew about the seals. So maybe they would respect Pohaku. The bunch of folks were very loud, just having fun jumping off the rocks...they did stay AWAY FROM POHAKU...WHILE I was THERE...after I left...who knows. But Debbie was there watching out for the seal from the Sandy side of the shore. I dont know what happened after I left...but Pohaku was very alert with all the yelling and she was looking over her shoulder. I dont think she stayed too much longer as tide was rising.
Lastly, we went to check on Kerby and this visit we met up with NOA R6FI, snoozing above Kerby..Kerby in the water hole. But just before I left, I saw Noa wiggle his way down the rocks and into the SAME WATER HOLE AS KERBY. And..there was no whooping, no snorting going on..just a peaceful slumber between two great young seals..Kerby and Noa.
So..today was a great day of seals, people, with no troubles at all. Life is SENSATIONAL!!! We go home...Happy.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all volunteers who helped today...you are all appreciated..HONEST!!!!!
