December 18, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team Billand was at the outfall early this morning and stayed for three hours. When they arrived it was still dark and they saw nothing. They stayed and some of the NOAA folks came by, Cianna and intern Hunter. At 7:20 they spotted a small seal in and out of the outfall moving really fast. They could not get an ID.
Then they spotted RN14 Kalani coming in and doing 5 minute dives.
At 9:30 Team Billand headed over to a near by location and saw a seal coming in. Once again it was RN14 Kalani hauling in on the rocks. His tag showing and natural bleach on right side.

Team Billand moved on to their next stop and upon arrival they saw a seal high on the rocks snoozing alone. It was Kawena RH36. In yesterday's news the seal with the right sided hooking scar was Kawena at the outfall, not Aukai in that one photo. Aukai was at the outfall as well.
Looks like Kawena was hauled out here for a bit since she was completely dry.

While there RIP RR70 hauled in after he had been foraging off shore. He went to Kawena, but didn't bother her and he stayed about 15 feet away from her.
Kawena eventually slid down the rocks into the shallow pond to cool off. RIP stayed where he was.

Just before noontime while watching RIP and Kawena Team
Billand looked and was surprised to see Ka'ale RH32 had just hauled in. They didn't even notice him coming in.  He was looking around to his right and then left, and before they knew it he took off. They conform his tag.

Team Billand did the Ka'ena West trek and only found one critter sleeping alone. Her 206 tag was visible and she was in a deep sleep.
Aside from RL98 Team Billand did see not one, not two but THREE whales!
