9/1/2015 DB's Dailies: Buster@HB, Nani@RI, Kaiwi@CW, Pohaku@Nanakuli, Holokai@Turtle Bay

As I stood at the overlook at Hanauma Bay on my usual morning check I spied a swimming animal cruising the beach front from west to east (right to left),stopping for a partial haul out occasionally, but continuing on, and heading out the “backdoor channel. I lost in on the outside of the reef. I went home to look at the photos and could confirm the Buster (RV08) ID , by a small scar on top of his head. Though I checked all the coastline multiple times during the day, I did not see him again. Nor did Gayle.

At 0722 I found what would prove to be Nani (RK60) in the Morning Glory, behind Seal Rock Inlet, on Rabbit Island. She was still there, but had moved down onto the beach on my 1052 return to Makai Pier. She would be the only RI resident today.

At 1254 Gayle advised that she’d seen Kaiwi (RK96) at China Walls.

At 0608 Team Billand made the first call on Pohaku (RO28) at Nanakuli. She would depart a 1009, then haul out again down the beach at 1225, depart at 1300, then haul out again at 1334 at Depot’s , Nanakuli. Thanks to Debbie & Chrissy. It was yet another troubled day in Nanakuli.

According to the Billands there was a report of an animal at Paradise Cove, however it was gone when they arrived. No further info.

Volunteer Jon Gelman sent a couple of shots of Holokai (RG40) from his Turtle Bay shift today. The “goop” that had been observed on his lower lip seems to be gone today. Thanks Jon !
