7-27-2012 DB's Dailies:

A 0725 I found Buster (RV08) doing 10 minute dives at Spitting Cave.

On my 3rd look at Rabbit Island at 1035 I found Aukai snoozin' on the beach, 80 ft left of Seal Rocky Inlet, and Kolohe (RW22) once again on the left end rock flats at RI.

At 1257 I noticed that Kolohe was no longer visible. At 1323 he hauled out to join Aukai. Kolohe's behavior was outstanding. He was not aggressive at all. Aukai however immediately started trying to nurse on Kolohe' belly. Kolohe, though annoyed, did not overreact. After a while he did do a quick head thrust at Aukai and the weaner moved away about 5 to 10 ft.

At 1409 Aukai began a leisurely move to the water, and Kolohe followed. I could see them playing for a short time. At 1428 Aukai hauled out alone. I did not see Kolohe again today.

Team Billand called at 0619 with the report that Pohaku (RO28) had overnighted at Banyan Tree Beach, KoOlina.

Dana called at 1236 to advise that RI37 was at 3 Tables, on the North Shore.

Team Billand called at 1321 with the report of Rocky (RH58) at Iroquois Point.

The Billands found Benny (RE74) at Maili Point at 1501.

Kolohe gently playing with the weaner
Aukai trying to nurse from Kolohe, if I remember correctly Kolohe did the same thing when he arrived on Rabbit Island as a weaner

Not sure what is happening.... is the guy startled by RO28? Or is he going to throw something? Interesting moment in time... What we do know Pohaku is not happy.

Had been watching Pohaku all day for two days. She was doing just fine.

Every day around sunset, these folks come around with their dogs LOOSE. Some times there are up to 12 dogs. Well, today there was 8. Some were loose and this one lab, was running towards the water, ran into Pohaku who was sound a sleep and tucked in for the night. As the dog ran down the cliff, Pohaku whooped, barked at the dog, but the dog kept coming. Owner got worried, ran after the dog yelling to stop, but too late. Pohaku protected herself, whooped so loud, jumped in the air, barking at the dog, trying to bite the dog and the ownder, who jumped backwards...the dog ran to the water, owner grabbed the dog. But Pohaku was so upset, she ran away, looking back at the dog..PISSED OFF. She entered the water in a hurry from a DEAD SLEEP, turning once more to check out the dog and then was gone. FOr two days Rob and I tried to advise folks to keep the dogs leashed. For two days we had our signs up..KEEP DOGS ON LEASE...CAUTION, seal could BITE. ALl these folks think their dogs will never go after a seal...but they do.

It is horrible to stand there pleading with folks to please stop their dogs...these dogs are so fast, we can NEVER stop them. My heart always pumps like crazy to witness a dogs run in with the seals who are a sleep on the sand.

We keep telling folks, THE SEALS ARE NON AGGRESSIVE, BUT IF APPROACHED, IT WILL FIGHT FOR ITS LIFE..AND THEY DO!! Pohaku was like a LION, ROARING!!!!

In the end of event, the owner appologized...BUT YOU KNOW WHAT???? If they had just leashed the dog, this wouldnt happen. It sickens me to the core. Pohaku would have over nighted for a third night. Too bad. Hopefully she dont go there again.

All the dog guys watched Pohaku scurry away, enter the water, then disappear.

And we all know, there are leash laws, and we all know, dogs arent allowed on beaches...but...its an every day thing. Too bad!!!!
