12-9-11 DB Dailies and More

I was batting zero once again today, until I got to Spitting Cave. Kathy and Gayle arrived shortly after me. At 0833 Kathy first spied Kaiwi (RK96) near the cave. Kaiwi then proceeded to do several 7 minute dives, all on the cave side of the big rock. We last saw her at 0902. Gayle and I hung around until 10, but Kathy stay. Kaiwi was not see there again.

While speaking to Gayle on the phone at 1200, assuring her that I saw nobody at Crappy Cove, and she assuring me that she too had seen nobody just minutes before, a familiar little face did a brief look over the water front rocks. Kaiwi was there, 3 hours after we'd last seen her at SC. She hauled out to the water front rocks and has remained there the rest of the day. Donna, Marie, Gayle, Kathy & June were all there , and Marilyn and I did the final shift of the day. Kaiwi was still there when I departed at dark.

Team Billand checked in at 0754 with an M&M (R020) fronting the #1813 pavilion at Nimitz Cottages.

At 0815 they reported Kermit (R012) at Kermit's Reef, on the west side of the Nimitz Jetty.

At 1105 the Billands found Irma (R010) at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park.

Dana checked in at 1227 to advise that Vera had found Right Spot and Right Spot's Spot, Turtle Bay.

Dera called at 1315 to advise of an U/U at V-land on the North Shore. Photos provided by Karen Banes are inconclusive. There just isn't enough info available. It does appear to be a female, with a new coat, and a Cookie Cutter scar (maybe 2) visible. My gut feeling is that it is KC, but the email states that tags were seen, though not visible in the shots. If there were tags, that rules out KC. Bottom line... U/F ???????

Also at 1315 Dera reported an animal at the extreme west end of Sand Island. She called back at 1330 to advise that HPD had identified the animal as Ewa Girl (RS00) by her 1AP tag.

 Right Spot @ Turtle Bay
Need to get some seal sunglasses....
 Unidentified Female U/F
M+M - okay if anyone ever has the time... look through all the M+M shots... I swear she has this look on her face at least 90% of the time... almost like she is straining to look at something. I am convinced this is just her unique look since it happens so often. So not all monk seals look the same.!
 Miss Irma @ Campbells
 tiny teeth marks?
Kermit when ya going to shed that coat?
My back hurts just looking at this... other than his tail you wouldn't know he was there.

Miss Gorgeous M and M is a beautiful seal, that I so love to photograph. She has those huge eyes, that nearly pop out of her sockets, and, she is always looking out over her back, her front, all over, as if she is ready to split any second. She is very ansi, well she hangs out at Rabbit Island, Kaena Pt. lately out at SWQ.
When we met this seal two years or more ago, she was this seal that scurried along the shores, as if, she needs to run away...just not happy if a human was around. But lately, with Miss Irma there, she would keep looking at Miss Irma, if Irma showed no nervousness, M and M would stay. But she keeps checking the area every few minutes. I watch her, I can see her eyes peeking, closing, peeking, closing. THen she dozes off. Once in a while she'll flip her tail up in the air, eyes wide opened, feeling silly, as there aint no one near her...then she snoozes off again. Poor baby..just a nervous girl. But oh so pretty to see.A real sweet seal. FAT..Bulging eyes, clean body, not too much of any markers to id her. She is a tuff one to id, but her behavior is a give away. THen the small scratches on her left side of her face, along with her funny belly with those long squiggley lines.
It amazes us, how DB can ID her from 1/8 mile away...we have a hard time just 50 feet away...any ways, thats M and M...Pretty Baby.
If one day she got her bleach, it would make things so much easier for us.
