On my Makapuu Beach check at 0720, I found Irma (R010)
, once again at the far right end of the beach. I trudged down and cordoned her
off. She remained all day, departing at 1823. I once again tudged down and
picked up the stuff.
On Zeenie's 8-10 checks of the Cove to ADs she found
nobody. When I arrived at Crappy Cove at 1040, there was a familiar butt
sticking out of the Naupaka. Kaiwi (RK96) spent the rest of the day at the Cove
moving down to the water front rocks, then back up to the beach, and then again
back down amongst the rocks. On my way home tonight I stopped for a quick Kaiwi
check at 1846, and she was still snoozin' amongst the rocks. Much thanks to
Zeenie, Kathy, June, Larry & Jean (with a special guest appearance by Gayle
late in the day).
While on the subject of Kaiwi, I found a water shot of
Kaiwi on the Island Divers site, from yesterday, which I've attached.
Team Billand called at 0812 with the report of Pohaku
(RO28) and 2AW together at Electric Beach.
Team Billand made the whole day with their next calls
beginning at 1436. Barbara advised that they were in pursuit of an U/U who had
attempted to haul out at White Plains , then again attempted a haul out at
Kalaeloa Campgrounds, but once again the haul out didn't happen. At Nimitz
Cottages there was another attempt fronting #1705, and the finally a partial
haul out fronting #1777. It was MAKAIWI !!!! (R4DF) (bleach V02). She stayed
only briefly before heading in a Campbell's direction.
This young female, of unknown age, first seen on Kauai, first showed up here on 4-27-10. She had last been seen on Oahu, at Diamond Head on 7-15-11. On 7-29-11 she appeared on the Big Island (where she got her bleach), and has essentially been a BI girl ever since. As a matter of pure chance I happened to have had a conversation with Diane Pike today, on Molokai, and she advised that amongst the 13 seals she had seen on her trek yesterday (12-20-11), was Makaiwi. That in itself was fantastic, but just a couple of hours later Barbara calls with this piece of news.

Dana checked in at 1624 to advise that other animals
found today, on the North Shore were RI37 at Laniakea, and Right Spot (R016) at
Rocky Point.

It was nice to see Kaiwi this afternoon at Crappy Cove. She was sound asleep, nothing could bother her, nor the wind, nor the dozen of Brazilian Cardinals flying around her !
