We got a call of two seals at Makaha, Rachel Diaz responded and with one seal at the time. By time we got there, Rachel Diaz and friend Brittany were guarding this seal, that seal, running back and forth with the local guys who were throwing stuff at the R028. But what ever they tossed at her, she didnt take. Ok got R028 taken care of per Rachel and Brittany. Off to check the second seal near the wall fronting the beach house and Makaha Shores. The seal tucked nice and snug against the wall, up side down, snoozing just fine. Took some photos, then thought, getting late better leave. As I walked away, I turned once more to look and then saw two people with LEASHED dogs. I tried to go back to warn them of the seal in corner, but, too late. Benny started his growling the dog its barking and stare down, pulling his master. I was amazed how powerful a sound Benny was making...deep throat stuff, growling for his safety. Man finally got control of the dog, Wife was next. She came pretty close herself, Benny was going nuts. Man was saying OK, OK, hold on. Finally lady passed with her dog. Benny saw a passage to run..and that he did, right off the reef into the water to be met by a diver..Benny then dived down deep and was gone like a torpedo. Oh my gosh...what a thing to watch. I was so nervous for Benny...those folks knew the seal was there cause, as they passed, I heard em say, "Oh that must be the same seal from Earlier!!" The area was way too small for a seal and two dogs.
Thanks to Rachel and Brittany for their courage in keeping the seals safe from humans who dont understand about Monk Seals. You done good guys.
And I happened to look down, saw the plaque from Mr. Beal...I grew up in this area, never saw that before. Thought it was cool.
This is an area with DOGS all the time, humans who run off seals, feed them etc. Too bad, as the seals come here all the time. Its the same place Benny, Irma and Kermit had the brawl of the century last year Sept.
Again..good job Rachel and Brittany.
