9/2/2010 DB Dailies

At 0632, from the Makapuu Overview , I found Ewa Girl once again at Rocky Right Beach, after yesterday's little trip to Hanauma Bay. Today she would remain there all day. By the end of the day, her D#7 molt was 98%.

At 0923, Buster hauled out for a short while 100 ft left of 1BS at the left end of the beach. He was doing alot of head bobbing, and bellowing, on an empty beach. At 0930 Duke swam by in the shallows, and Buster beat flipper to the water to join him. I lost them immediately, however Duke would haul out alone on the far left end of the beach, at 0942. I would not see Buster again until 1400, when he too hauled out the the far left end.

Sam would finish the cast. He hauled out to the far left end also, at 1517.

Unfortunately, all that peace and quiet was very much disrupted by two separate DOCARE Incidents. I had gone off to do a Blowhole check (looking for Buster), and when I checked Rabbit Island from the Makapuu Overview at 1340 I immediately saw 4 people standing all around Duke. There were 2 males and 2 females. Their kayaks were directly in from of the 3BS, so they would have walked all the way to the left end, passing all the "NO LANDING" signs, twice, not to mention being parked in front of one. I called DOCARE immediately and then relocated to Makai Pier. At that point the two males were walking back toward the kayaks, however the two females were still in close proximity to Duke. One of them laid down 2 ft from him while the other took pictures. They departed the island at 1405, and were met by DOCARE Officer Maui at 1440. Unfortunately, he had not witnessed any of the RI action, so he issued them a warning.
The second incident involved two males on a Jet Ski, who anchored off shore at 1408 and then swam to the beach , just left of 2BS. The proceeded directly to Duke , where they got close enough to cause him to posture and bark. They backed off. While they were with Duke, Buster attempted to haul out but thought better of it, until the guys began to walk away. They departed RI at 1420 heading in a Makapuu Point direction. There was no DOCARE response, however I did give them the HA 2118 H number on the Jet Ski.

Team Billand called at 0950 to report Kermit at Wind Sock, Kalaeloa Beach.

At 1045 they found Makaiwi between the two bunkers on the west side of the Nimitz jetty.

Dana checked in at 1525 to say that after a day of looking, Ua Malie had just been found, once again in one of those gnarly reef locations from the other day, on the Kahuku side of the point.

Suggestion for RI: Add signs to the "No Landing" ones that say:

"This island under camera surveillance. Fines and sentencing under endangered species laws enforced."

For sure, DB gets their pictures.

Also, add one of HMSRTO's perimeter signs. These signs may not keep people off the island but might encourage them to leave quickly.

what i don't understand is.... if DOCARE didn't see them.. THEY KNOW DB has pictures, its a no brainer. Ah well.

The adding of any signs or perimeter equipment unless it's installed properly could potentially cause more harm than good... windy conditions and other factors could cause an entanglement issue...

Just need better enforcement and proactive presence than a reactive on... The goal would be they just don't land there at all.

People land there thinking no one can see them so they can't be caught. Signs drilled and bolted (or otherwise installed properly) to existing sign posts would let people know they are not only seen but photographed.

Add to signs to say "you are under survellience, you will be prosecuted under State Law. Class C felony and all that entails.
