Aloha all,
Unfortunately, a monk seal was attacked by a Pit Bull earlier today in the Kau region. Reports from the NOAA law enforcement agency say the attack lasted for about a minute until the seal retreated into the ocean. The extent of injury is unknown, and is very little information currently about this matter. If you have any information (location attack may have taken place, name of dog owner, recent seal sightings, etc.) please contact our monk seal line at 808-756-5961, or email hmmrn@hawaii.edu.
Also, this attack reminds us that each individual seal is crucial to the survival of the species. There are only ~1,100 seals left, and the number declines each year. If you see a seal, please remember to be respectful and call the hot line above, but send us photos that may assist in the photo-identification of the seal.
Please email if you are still here for the summer and can be on standby for a response.
Thank you,
Laura J. Knight

I am so sorry this happened to your seal. We have experienced many dogs getting seriously too close to our seals too. We tell the owners to keep the dogs on a leash. Some say,"oh my dog is an obedient dog, and he would never attack the seal". And then just as they finish the sentence, that obedient dog barks with a vengence, and the owner can hardly control the animal. Kermit was attacked in the water by two dogs as we watched in shock, but Kermit also responded to the dogs with a hardy bellow and charge. Owners frantically trying to get the dogs back and away from Kermit. And of course Kermit left area immediately. Fortunately, no bite was given, but it came close. Irma has been attacked also but she took off in the water. So I am very sorry this seal got bit and I hope you guys get that owner. I hope that seal is ok and can continue with its life. Bah!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have an update?
I haven't heard any updates yet... I imagine they are busy looking. I will post when I do.
