It was another action packed, and interesting day in the Monk Seal World. At 0640 the Rabbit Island cast would consist of Sadie , at the left end of the beach. She would move down and depart at 0846.
At 0643 I found Sam lolling in the shallows off shore of 1BS. He would have an eventful day. Tracy and Thea went to Rabbit Island this morning to tag Sam. They arrived at 0930 and departed at 1212. It was not until 1153 that they FNALLY captured the chunky little dude, and attached his new bling. He is now officially RT30 /31. There will be photos, however Tracy has to catch a flight for Kauai so it may be tomorrow before we see them.
While Tracy & Thea were off tracking down Sam, Buster arrived at 0949 and proceeded directly to their kayaks. He was on patrol all day, and would haul out once again to the kayaks , while Tracy & Thea were intent on watching Sam. It took them a while before they were even aware of him.
At 0640 Team Billand reported Kermit , swimming outside the Nimitz jetty, and Makaiwi crashed on the beach at the Nimitz Cottages. Kermit would haul out to Wind Sock, Kalaeloa Beach at 0742.
Sam getting his tags was great, but the reeeeeally big news in my mind was the call at 1332 from Team Billand, reporting RI37 at Kahe Power Plant (Electric Beach). Regular readers will remember her as the little female who sustained the really nasty slice wound just above her ankles back on 4-6-10. The Billands had her at Maili on the 6th and the 7th. She was seen thereafter at Shark's Cove on 4-28-10 and 5-2-10 . Her last sighting I'm sorry to say, was at Larsen's Beach on Kauai , along side her dead pup, on 5-16-10.
She looks healthy and her wound appears completely healed, so hopefully life will get better for her.
An unknown posse member called me at 0826 with the report of an animal at the showers at Diamond Head. When I asked her if it looked like her fur was falling off she gave an enthusiastic Yes ! . It was, of course, Rocky . I called Colleen immediately, and she went to attend to her Monk Seal. Dera sent confirmation photos. It was in fact Rocky, 75% molted.
This was D#15 for R5AY&P at Turtle Bay.

Seeing I37 this afternoon was PRICELESS! She was so green, so gorgeous, healthy looking, and determined to get over to the other side of the rock formation. She is awesome to observe, to see her muscles working, her determination getting here to there, just so amazing! Seeing her scar all healed is great, she took care of her injury all by herself. I'll never forget that day at Maili, seeing her coming in and then noticing, SOMETHING WASNT RIGHT WITH HER. THEN REALIZING SHE WAS HURT, OH MAN, THAT WAS SHOCKING. My prayers were with her at all times...So grateful she is ok and moving on in her seal world. May she bring us little ones soon...FEMALE of course.
