02/10/2020 Monday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's update is part two of the dailies.

A quick followup to yesterday's commentary on the "take" of a seal on the west side.  Authorities have an active investigation going.  The person who took the video and posted it made a public apology.  I read his post on instagram and believe his words of apology were sincere in that he made a mistake by standing by and not doing anything. He did not do anything to the seal, but he was there to witness what happened.  He was not aware of the seriousness of the situation and I would say this incident hopefully taught him a valuable lesson.
ONCE AGAIN....  this is one of the KEY reasons to be out on the beaches talking and educating people. It matters, it is better to be proactive than to react to a situation like this.

Team Billand spotted their first seal by the outfall. It was by the rocks and the fishermen and then went out fast. No possible ID, add to that the winds and rain.

Early in the day Team Billand went to plains to see and they did not see any seals, just surfers and debris washing on shore. The watched the sunrise and then left for an appointment. Seems the weather was reeking havoc all over causing traffic tie ups and power outages.

Team Billand sis return to plains in the afternoon and saw a seal on shore in a zone already in place. (thank you life guards).  There they found Buster boy RV08. A group arrived and were heading to for Buster, Barb spoke with the lifeguards and they were able to help deter them.
Team Billand called the hotline to update them and then left the site.

By the time they made it back to west side the winds were insanely
wild and dangerous, blowing trees down and limbs breaking.  "Toto we're not in Kansas anymore"

They spotted two U/Us swimming away and conditions made getting an ID impossible.
AT 2:15 a little further west they found two seals hauled out.  They were able to get a ID both RL20 Kalua and R3CX Nalu. They were side by side nice and cozy in this crappy weather.

Team Billand did the SMART thing and called it a day and went home!
