1-27-2014 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi@Toilet Bowl, 2 UU@RI, Kermit,Makaiwi,Haupu & RIP@WP, Pohaku@Nanakuli, R5AY&Pup,La'akea@TB, Ewa Girl@RR, RI37@Shark's Cove

It was a perfect Monk Seal day, but maybe not so perfect for we care providers out there. Despite lotsa’ lookin’ but myself and Gayle it would be 1317 before I actually found my first critter. It was Kaiwi (RK96) , snoozin’ away at Toilet Bowl, Hanauma Bay. Once again she was near the bowl itself, but this time on Olivine sand. The hook at the right corner of her mouth was still visible. I contacted Tracy and after numerous calls it appeared that a team couldn’t be amassed that late in the day. It turned out to be a moot point anyway as Kaiwi moved down on the wet rock surface at the lip of the toilet bowl. The mission was canceled.

My first two kinda’/sorta’ looks at Rabbit Island were attempted in horrible visibility, but I did not see anybody. On my 3^rd look at 1510 I found two U/U animals, partially visible in the Morning Glory near 1BS. It was impossible to make an ID due to the weather conditions.

At 0728 Team Billand reported Kermit (R012) once again on the shower pad at White Plains. They also advised that Makaiwi (R4DF) was just beginning to haul out to that location, but she apparently changed her mind and returned to the water. They reported that Kermit moved to the water to join her. They were not reported again.

At 0928 Ocean Safety called with the report of an animal at Nanakuli Beach Park. The Billands would later confirm the Pohaku (RO28) ID.

Diane Gabriel called a 1000 from the R5AY&Pup site to advise that Mom & Pup were30-40 ft Kahuku side of the existing SPZ and very high on the beach. She also reported La’akea (RK82) at Right Spot’s Spot, Turtle Bay.
