7-11-11 DB Dailies

Everything else in today's news pales in comparison to the drama that played out in The SW Quadrant today. I'll get the light weight stuff outta' the way first.

At 0633 I found Nani cruisin' in a tide pool, right of 3BS on Rabbit Island. She would later haul out to the Waimanalo side of Left Point Beach, at the far left end of the island. That is the furthest left that I'd ever seen the girl. She would later relocate to a spot 60 ft left of 1BS.

At 0640 I found what would prove to be Sadie (RB12) up in the Morning Glory, 40 ft left of 1BS. She would later relocate to the left end rock flats, but the rising tide drove her from that spot and she met up with Nani at 1304. The played and drifted to the right, until both hauled out together at mid Middle Cliff. Sadie stayed just a few moments, departing and hauling out again to 1BS. Nani remained at the Middle Cliff location. On my 0702 Spitting Cave check I found Buster (RV08) doing 8 minute dives.

Team Billand called at 1032 to advise that posse members Clay and Sharon Gates had called them to report T21M at Iroquois Point. Photos from the Gates confirmed that ID.

The really news of the day began at 0949 with a call from Team Billand , reporting Max (R5EW) at Kermit's Reef, NIM. They called again at 1015 to advise that Max had entered the water and was headed west. They had seen an Ulua hook on the left side of his mouth, with wire leader and swivel. They notified the office, and then began to follow Max.

At 1100 they found him hauling out to join Makaiwi (R4DF) at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park. They notified NOAA personnel and the response began.

At 1140 both Max and Makaiwi reentered the water. Fortunately, at 1246 Max returned to CIP at a different location. Dera found him on her way to meet the other personnel. Local NOAA personnel, assisted by visiting Marine Mammal Center personnel captured Max at 1330 and removed the hook. Thank you to everybody involved in the operation, and especially to Team Billand who have once again earned a giant "Ya' Done Good "!!!
