When we got to site, we could hear the seals vocalizing. We could see Mom biting Kekoa's butt, making him leave the water..this kept happening, we're thinking, weaning to come soon. Ewa Girl is now doing TUFF LOVE mode, making Kekoa ready for the wean process to come. She was mean, slapping Kekoa, Kekoa responding with flipper slaps himself and vocalizing. Kekoa made it to shore, took a breather, turned, looked at Ewa girl as if to ask, "WHATS WRONG MOM, WHY SO MEAN TO ME???" Pup edges towards Mom, Slowly, as if asking permission to be fed. This time, finally, Ewa Girl lets pup go to her, she galumpth higher and rolls to side for a feed. That pup guzzled all he could, even pressing his foreflipper into moms stomach. Then Kekoa, snuggled close to Mom's heart, fell a sleep. Ewa Girl reached over and gave Kekoa a little KISS, AWE..now she is showing her love for him and I loved it. Really sweet moment. Both seals snooze, but, now and then Ewa Girl gently moved away from Kekoa. Kekoa dropped his little flipper to touch mom to see if she was still there. He moved to her side, touching. Ewa Girl moves a bit away AGAIN. Same thing, Pup extends flipper to touch. Times up, noon, got to leave. Awe crap! I wanted to stay longer, but, rules are rules and we all left with security. Who knows how much longer Ewa Girl will remain? I hope she waits for us to see her and Kekoa together one more time, or perhaps see the actual weaning take place...I want to witness this ONCE. God bless our amazing Hawaiian Monk Seals..truly beautiful creatures, fascinating to observe. Kekoa..looks like a baby HIPPO now..can hardly manuever around. So engorged!!
