7-2-11 DB Dailies

I didn't know what to expect as I began the route this morning. This was D#39 with M&M and Pup, and her 2009 pup, Mikala was weaned on D#39. When I peered into the scope at 0620, there were M&M and pup, doing the first of 6 feeds, at the left Middle Cliff location. They were there all day. With Mikala she moved to the 1BS area and weaned the next day. When I departed the pier this afternoon, they had hauled out to 1BS for the first time. Tomorrow ?????

There were 2 1/2 hours of stress this morning from 0920 until 1146. The pup managed to get itself in some kind of a hole or depression on the water front rocks, and stuggled for 2 1/2 hours trying to get out, with no sucess. I called D. Schofield at 1120 to advise of the situation. He began making calls. On our 2nd conversation at 1146, with the addition of a bit more tide, the pup managed to free itself.

On my return to Makai Pier at 0820, I found that Duke (RA12) was now on the water front rocks , 40 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet.

At 1300 I became aware of a swimming head, cruising the beach front, back and forth. It would prove to be Buster (RV08). I got the ID when he hauled out to join Duke briefly.

Buster was a pain in the flippers of M&M all afternoon, attempting to haul out to her location, numerous times. On one occasion he actually got quite close. Mom never had a clue, on that location. Mostly, he never got closer than 25 ft before she was alerted to him.

Donna Festa was at the Reef Runway today, and found Ewa Girl (RS00) &Pup, along with RIP (RR70). Donna can fill us all in with her own report and photos on da' blog.

Team Billand called at 0730 to report Makaiwi (R4DF) fronting #1760 and White Plains, and called again at 0738 to advise that Max (R5EW) was fronting #1707. Barbara checked in at 1707 to advise that both animals were still there.

Marilyn did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and reported Kerby (RW08) , Ka'ena (RO40) and Noa (R6FI), at the end of the world.

Many thanks go out to the Billands for the research and reporting early Saturday so that signed up volunteers could get to the area for their shifts. Volunteers Frank Vansteel (who has been on duty and on call since Friday), Alan Renninger, the always reliable and effervescent Willaimsons, thank you Jan and Willie, and the Cobers, Glenn and Vera who have become a very important part of our response network and a joy to work with. Big Mahalos to you all.
