I would like to send a special shout out to all the volunteers that put in the time this weekend at the beaches.... It goes without saying that DB, Barbara and Robert are out there EVERY SINGLE DAY... sun up to sun down.... there is never enough gratitude to measure how much they contribute to the well being of the Hawaiian monk seal species.... I tip my hat, and bow to them and top it off with a huge hug...
Okay Barbara was kind enough to send me the names of the good people out there.... so a big huge MAHALO to:
Karen Bryan
Jan and Jerry Dill
Tony Querbin
Vera and Glen Cober with Son
Mina Drake
Larry Stamey and Jeannie Compton
and of course our response coordinator Dana Jones

The day began with three critters, the usual, but the crowd was unbelievable. Right from the start, you could feel every ones energy which was high..they were at all the beaches, swimming, surfing, snorkling, diving, playing ball, fishing, running, screaming, running into the seal zones. Boogie boards sliding quickly into the SPZ, many times. Swimmers in front of Max R5EW. I called for the troops, it wasnt a day just for us...we needed the help and fast. At first I just stayed with Max who draws attention being so little. Everyone wants to get that photo. Max was below and snoozing fine. but as the tide came in fiercely, we moved our ropes higher, but leaving a path for the public. He was maybe 10 feet from ropes. We couldnt believe he stayed all day, snoozing, not caring about all the comotion going on at Plains. LIFEGUARDS were great, helping us to ANNOUNCE to the public.KEEP BACK FROM THE SEAL, GO AROUND!!!
One by one volunteers took turns watching our Max at Plains. But we needed more volunteers to help with the other two seals at Windsock..Irma. At Nimitz Beach Cabins...makaiwi.
So Max had volunteers Karen Bryan, us, then Jan and Jerry Dill to 1:00pm. The Cobers, Vera and Glen took separate shifts with Max, onto Makaiwi, then Irma. Rob and I went from Max, to Irma, to Makaiwi also, all day long till 7pm.
Other volunteers Jeannie Campton and Larry Stamey watched over Max. Mina Drake took her watch with Makaiwi from one to four by herself. It was nonstop activity for all of us.
And later in the day a visitor with a friend stopped by White Plains, who came to us, introducing herself as Lisa Croft with NOAA and her dear friend Lani. She came to check out the areas that are talked about on the blog. She could see for herself, how crazy it can get out there. We showed them Irma and Makaiwi also. It was fun to explain what goes on all the time on three day weekends and just weekends..PERIOD.
Thanks to all volunteers for helping out with the Hawaiian Monk Seals basking in the sun.
So glad the weekend is DONE.
And If we missed any volunteers names, I am sorry. You know you are so very appreciated.
In the end..Max left at 6:49pm. Irma remained over night, we left her at 7pm. Makaiwi left at 4:00pm, too much noisey folks already. Yippeee.....we did it together..I always say..TEAM work...WORKS!!!
