Hey Jan, hows it going????? Miss you. Yes Makaiwi is looking very sassy these days, she is nearly done with her molt. She been there for 19 days already. Soon she will leave area. Max was attacked by three dogs today in the morning at Nimitz Bunkers. Tsk. Tsk. I was pretty upset that happened. We never saw it happen, some guys told us and called. He seems ok, nervous about hauling up, but ok.I dont know why folks dont leash the dogs with a seal around. Poor Baby.

Barb; Was he hurt? Do you know if they actually made contact with him or did they go after him and force him back into the water... I hate hearing this stuff... you would think people would get the message by now...

Guess this means more people are needed out there. I hope you are well and doing better. Yes Maka'iwi is looking very sassy with her new coat.

Max seemed ok, after being run off by the three dogs. I dont know if there was contact, I didnt see the event. Max was upset, defending himself according to the witnesses. I tried to follow him to observe any new wounds. I took photos too of his little body, I didnt see anything really. He had to haul up three times before feeling safe. We stayed with him for a while, he seemed ok. I am angry, there is not much being done about the loose dogs at the beach daily. I keep making reports of what we see out there...We tell folks with dogs to keep them on a leash if seals are basking. Most are really great owners, but, then you got those that dont give a rats ass and let the dogs roam, pee and poop without cleaning up after them. It sickens me to know, Max was a victim of THREE DOGS. And we didnt see the event, so I really dont know if there was ANY CONTACT...the dogs did run Max off in to the water.
I really dont think there are any beaches where a Monk Seal can bask in peace...not even Rabbit Island.
How tragic is that??? Monk Seals really live a tragic life..Period. If dogs arent running them off, its humans. So pathetic, so sad. Seems the beaches are DOG PARKS..I wish we could stop these dogs from roaming wild. Any suggestions????

City and County limits dog parks, this needs to be addressed at that level. But people will still let there dogs run loose on the beach whether there is a dog park or not.

Well, it doesnt make any difference to a seal that is hauled out on a beach, resting. The problem isnt going away at all if no one steps in to help that seal. Laws are made to be Broken it seems, no one enforces laws, its just free for all, anything goes. No matter if this mammal is protected by THE STATE, THE FEDERAL LAWS, AND The endangered species act. What a shame. Tsk. Tsk.I wish I had more balls to do something about this..it aint fair to Monks, the innocent ones, just trying to SURVIVE.
