6/11/2010 DB Dailies

On my first look at Rabbit Island, from the Makapuu Overview at 0638, I found a bit of an oddity. M38 was bellowing in the shallows at the left end , and Ewa Girl was snoozin' up the Morning Glory, 60 ft left of 1BS. To my shock and awe, the pup was at least 50 ft away from Mom, and was galumphing toward M38, who was about 100 ft away. M38 started toward the pup, and as they approached one another , Mom finally realized what was going on and charged down the incline, bellowing all the way. M38 beat flipper outta' there. I've never before seen a pup that had managed to slip away from Mom to that extent.

Also at 0635 I found Sadie up in the grass, at the right end of the beach. I've found her there each of the last 3 mornings. She would later move down to cool off. After leaving the scene with the Mom and up fiasco, M38 swam down and hauled out to join Sadie at the right end of the beach. They would remain together for the rest of the day.

On a pan at 1001 I found Duke on the far left end of the beach. He would remain there all day.

At 1023, Buster hauled out to join Duke at the left end. He got nothing at all from Duke, and departed at 1028. He would attempt to haul out and join Sadie and M38 at the right end. There was no real interaction. M38 simply turned and gave him "the look", with some probable gurgling, and Buster took off. I did not see him again today.

Team Billand had a busy little day. Their WP posse member Mochiko, called at 0615 to report Irma at White Plains. She and the surfers had put out the signs and rope. When the Billands arrived at 0649, Irma was gone. Foot prints in the cordon suggests that she was run off. At 1042 they would find Irma on Kermit's Reef on the west side of the Nimitz jetty. She would be washed off the reef by the rising tide at 1229, and wanted to haul out to the beach, however, 3 local females would not heed the Billands pleas to move, and Irma gave up and departed.

At 0649 Team Billand responded to a hotline call for 4DF at yesterday's location off Oneula Pl, in Ewa Beach. She had probably overnighted.

While there they looked down the beach to the east and found Rocky, off Parrish Dr. On their 1437 check they found that Rocky had departed.

Dera checked in at 0739 to say that someone was responding to an animal at Kualoa Point. I never heard anything else, but my dollar is definitely on R5AY. She owns that location.

Holy Cow? THe pup went away from MOM? Independent little one huh? Looks like we got a really curious, independent pup. Guess he cant wait to discover his new world. Good thing MOM got up from her snooze, it's hard to keep up with the little ones these days. Glad M38 split too? What was he thinking? And you witnessed the whole drama, all by yourself DB. Cool. See what one misses if they dont pay attention to seals? They will miss out. These seals are an amazing creation, we so enjoy every minute of our observations of them, NOT THE HUMANS. Each seal has its own personality, fun to watch. THey are so special. Thanks for sharing that incredible moment with Ewa And Pup.
