12/2/2014 DB's Dailies: Buster&Kea@SB, Aukai,Duke,Mojo,Kainoa,Kolohe,RM38&RK36@RI, Makaiwi, Haupu&Benny@WP

Sandy Beach was Monk Seal free when I arrived at 0600. When I got back to the outfall at 0800 I found Barbara V, on Kea watch, and to my happy surprise, Buster (RV08) in the shallows. He was obviously looking for Kea. He would hang around in he shallows until 0809 , departing to the east.

Shortly after his departure we looked over at the outfall at 0812 and Kea (RN46) had suddenly appeared. He woud galumph up to the Naupaka and remained the day, moving up and down a couple of times.

My first look at Rabbit Island had been a bust, but when I got back for round #2, I found a bumper croppa’ critters. 40 ft left of 1BS I found 4 animals just hauling out. They would prove to be Aukai (RL12), Duke(RA12), Mojo (RI17)&Kainoa(RN04). Duke&Mojo would have words, but things quickly quieted down. To the right of that group, was another gang of 3, fronting Left Greenery. They were Kolohe (RW22), a 10% molted RM38, and a 98% molted RK36. The whole gang would remain all day.

At 0642 Team Billand advised that Makaiwi (R4DF) had been at White Plains and had been cordoned off by posse member Rich, but as they arrived she departed. They followed her as she foraged headed west, last seeing her at Kalaeloa Campgrounds.

At 0649 they reported Haupu (RB24) at the showers, White Plains. At 0849 they reported the arrival of Benny (RE74) fronting #1707, WP.

A few days ago Kimo Smith sent shots of Temp402 at Ka’ena Point. Based on the V7 bleach, Tracy advised that it wasn’t Temp 402, but was Temp302 from Kauai. As it turns out after further review Temp 402 IS Temp302, and now that you’ve learned that, forget it because, now he is neither . He has been assigned a new “permanent ID “ number, Tem402/302 is now R330. Got that ?

I’ve saved the worst for last. I’m extremely sad to report that Rocky’s little , 5 month old daughter was found dead yesterday on Kauai. A press release was issued today, and all the news are reporting the story. Sadly, the cause of death was “blunt force trauma to the head”. Yet another sad commentary on our fellow man.

Kimo Smith sent a Yesterday's News report with the cast being, RIP(RR70), Ka'ena(RO40), Benny(RE74), RW02&R330 at KP, and Luana at Mokuleia.

Check the blog for the Billand’s day. I’ve got an airport run to make. Missus W returns tonight.

12/1/2014 Maka'iwi 4DF in All Her Glory!

Thank you Team Billand for a great series of shots.... Happy to hear your only problem out there was the nasty traffic.  Also good to see your spending the day with this beautiful seal.

 Mini Billand Foot Print!
 who's better than you?

She is a busy seal, hauling up and down all day long...and when she finally leaves, she squirts her way out to sea....the only seal I've seen do this behavior. Sorry, I tried to capture this for 5 years...its the best I got today...not the greatest, but, you can see her fountain.

Dont ya just love this incredible seal...Makaiwi R4DF???? WE DO!!!!!!!!!!!!

12/2/2014 DB's Dailies: Kolohe,Mojo, RM38,RK36, Duke&Kainoa@ RI, Kea@SB, Makaiwi@WP,

Kea was gone on my 0600 Sandy Beach check.

At 0653 on my first look at RI I found a 95% molted RK36, and a 5% molted RM38, together at Left Greenery.

On my 2nd look at 0849 I found Kolohe (RW22), 60 ft left of 1BS.

On my 3rd look at 1330 I found Mojo (RI17), 40 ft right of 1BS . I had last seen my #2 son on RI on 4-2-14.  Mr. Mojo, where have you been?  Were you in the company of some of our other seals.... is there a secret spot where you all gather?  good to have you home, now go bring the rest of them home!

Also at 1330 I found Buster (RV08) at mid Middle Cliff. He is back from his trip to visit the Billands.

 Lastly at 1330 I found Duke (RA12) & Kainoa (RN04) together 25 ft left of 3BS.

Hourly checks were done all day, and it was beginning to look like Kea was going to be a no show on D#49, but on my 1624 recheck therrrrrrre was Kea (RN46) with his head stuck in the Naupaka at the Sandy Beach outfall. A witness said he had hauled out 10 minutes prior to my arrival. I cordoned him off. Thanks to Barbara V, and Gayle .

Team Billand checked in at 0622 with the report of Makaiwi (R4DF) at the fence line, White Plains.

In the Yesterday’s news department, posse member Ken Tingman sent shots from his trek to the end of the world, where he found RIP (RR70), Ka’ena (RO40) and Benny (RE74).

Check the blog in the morning for the Billand’s day. They called to advise that they are, once again, stuck in going nowhere, west side traffic.

11/30/2014 DB's Dailies: RM38,RK36,Duke,Kolohe&Kainoa@RI, Kea@SB, Kaiwi@CW, Makaiwi&Haupu@WP, RI37@Laniakea

Kea was gone when I arrived at Sandy Beach at 0610.

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0722 I found RM38, 40 ft left of 1BS, and an 85% molted RK36 at Left Greenery.

When I got back to Makai Pier at 0823 the cast remained the same , however at 0932 RM38 would enter the water shortly after Duke (RA12)& Kolohe (RW22) arrived at 50 ft left of IBS. RM38 would haul out to join RK36 at Left Greenery at 0937.

While watching Kolohe & Duke, at 1006 I suddenly became aware of a small animal moving down, out of the Morning Glory, 50 ft left of 1BS. It would prove to be Kainoa (RN04). I was completely unware of him until he moved out of his hiding spot in the Morning Glory. At 1030 I took up residence on the park bench at the Sandy Beach out fall.

At 1205 Kea (RN46) arrived, and hauled out to the outfall. I cordoned him off. Kimo Smith said he saw Kea looking for a haul out spot at 0805 at the outfall, but the tide was working him too badly. Kimo lost him at 0812. Kea remained at dark.

Melanie C., called at 1238 with the report of Kaiwi (RK96) at China Walls.

At 0700 Team Billand reported Makaiwi (R4DF) at the fence line, White Plains. She would depart at 0804. At 0850 they reported Haupu (RB24) fronting the Surf Shack, WP.

Dana calledat 1416 with a report of RI37 at Laniakea. Awaiting photos.

In yesterday’s blog I told you that Kimo Smith had reported what we believed to be Temp#402 sporting a new V ? bleach. Email from Tracy this afternoon brought word that it was not , in fact ,Temp#402, but a new male critter with the designation Temp#302, with a newly assigned Kauai bleach # of V7. This marks the first Oahu sighting of this animal.
