11/10/10 DB Dailies

The Rabbit Island cast for today began with Mojo, left of 1BS and Kolohe, at 3BS, on my 0640 check. Buster would haul out to the far left end at1124. All would remain there all day.

On my 0749 , Spitting Cave journey I found Duke doing 6 minute dives. His new N18 bleach was more than clearly visible.

I put in many a mile on today's Irma Quest, covering the SE quadrant numerous times. Finally, while standing on the AD's Wall, at 1253, I

 looked down the Irma's beach front and spied an slightly rounder, slightly larger rock than the rest of the large, round rocks. When I parked at the Kealahou traffic light I found Irma, and cordoned her off. Irma remained as I picked up the rope, and left the signs in place at 1830.

Team Billand is (are) back !!! They called with the report of Kermit at White Plains at 0857.  Welcome Home Team Billand, Welcome Home!

Dana Jones checked in at 1643 to advise she was with an animal at Makaha. Photos showed that the critter was Benny.

BEACH Cleanup this Saturday 11-13-2010

Aloha Volunteers,
  Please mark your calendars and let me know if you can participate on November 13th at Turtle Bay for beach cleaning. We are going to meet at 7:30AM in the parking lot. You MUST RSVP in order for us to have proper gear for this planned event.
  We will be concentrating on the area that Ua'Malie, Right Spot, R5AY, and Lona frequents. As you can see from the photo, it is a need that is being addressed in order to protect all these North Shore babes and ladies from entanglement and injury.
  This area is to the right of Kahuku Point or Fisherman's Point, and seems to be a magnet for fishing and ocean debris. The critters frequently haul out in this area, and are right in the middle of this mess.
  We are very fortunate to be able to team up with B.E.A.C.H. and have their help, their volunteers, and their expertise join us in this joint endeavor. Please feel free to call or email me with your names and amount of people that wish to participate.

11/9/2010 DB Dailies

The Rabbit Island cast for today would begin with Mojo to the left of 1BS, and Duke up in the grass to the right of 3BS. When I got back to Makai Pier later I found that Buster had joined the cast at the left, end, and when I got back to Makai Pier later, later, I found find RIP on the water front rocks between Seal Rock Inlet and Rocky Right Beach. .

The reason for so much in and out to Makai Pier began at 0740 while I was doing my Spitting Cave check. Posse member Laura, and daughter called to advise that there was an animal on the beach at Makapuu. When I arrived at 0757 I found Irma. She was high and dry, suggesting that she had been there for a while. I realized that she might well have been there when I did my Makapuu Overview check, but I could not see that part of the beach from my observation point. Through the day, as I did further checks I found that I needed to go up to the higher observation point to see her. She was gone when I did my 1400 check. Lifeguards said that she left of her own volition, with the rising tide at approximately 1315. In the entire 15 million year history of Monk Seals, this is only the 2nd animal to haul out to Makapuu Beach (well....... for the last 10 years anyway). The only other animal to haul out to Makapuu was Chester on 3-20-08. He remained only a few hours on his way to Rabbit Island. Six days later (3-26-10), he died. Irma... Tomorrow ??... my guess would be Kaupo Beach Park (but that was my guess today too). As always, Only Irma Knows .

Dera called at 0933 to advise that there was an animal a Waimea Bay. When the volunteer arrived they were advised that the animal had departed at approximately 1245. That suggest quite a time lag before anybody arrived. The critters deserved better than that.

Posse member Lesley checked in at 1350 to advise that the Turtle Bay/ Kahuku area was Monk Seal free today.

Late word from Dera brough news that a probable Benny was at the condos in Makaha. The caller said there was a "W26" on the side. We are figuring that was most probably an N instead. There was no response.

11/8/2010 DB Dailies

Morning walker, posse member , Sheryl called at 0605 with the report of an animal at Sandy Beach. I was already on the road and on my way to SB, since there was zero doubt in my mind that "My Friend
Irma" (oooold radio....yeah...radio,show), would play a role in my life today. Sure enough when I arrived I found Irma at the east end of Sandy Beach. I got her cordoned off, and she has remained there all day. Mark got a new N3 bleach on her, right side, shoulder and hip. On my 1530 check Irma was gone. There were no witnesses in the area.
On my 0728 Spitting Cave check I found Buster doing 12 minute dives.

My first look at Rabbit Island had been a bust, however when I got back to Makai Pier at 0854 I found Duke up in the grass behind Seal Rock Inlet. He would later move down , allowing the ID, and spent the rest of the day there.

On a pan at 0902 I found Mojo and Kolohe just hauling out together at 3BS. They would remain there the rest of the day.

At 0954 I became aware of a swimming head at the far left end of the beach. RIP would haul out, and galumph higher on the beach where he remained the rest of the day.

Dera called at 1007 with the report of Right Spot at Rocky Point today. Thank you Jeanie , and an U/U at tower #1 at White Plains. Dana Jones would confirm the Kermit ID at 1220.

11/7/2010 Auntie Lesley North Shore Report

Hello to all,

Just got back from spending the wkd out @ Kawela and didn't make it on time for the dailies...
This morning I walked till TB with a friend and we found Right Spot @ her right spot favorite place. She turned around twice I wasn't fast enough to get the shots of her bleach marks.

You may notice the "fresh" foot prints all around her. When we arrived there was a group of 5 Russians on top of her - inside the roped area that was a big area and high on the beach. I called them and did some PR in a mix of French & English. They were going to touch her, take pics and were very happy that I got their attention BEFORE anything bad happened.

It was visible that she came in with the high tide cause of her several "bed" marks and the trail down to cool off.  She had her face washed by the stronger waves. When I called DB she was probably getting ready to go back into the water.

We didn't make it to the point, so I didn't see if Ua'Malie was around. They were LOTS of people on the beach today all the way to Kahuku Pt.

11/7/2010 DB Dailies

The Rabbit Island cast for today was RIP and Sadie at the left end, Duke at the right end, and a late arrival of Buster to join the left end critters. There was basically no interaction. Buster departed at 1110, and RIP left at 1239. Duke and Sadie remained.

At 1033 beach walker posse member Carol called to report an animal fronting the showers at Diamond Head. I called Colleen immediately. As soon as she picked herself up off the floor , after the shock of hearing there was actually a DH animal, she responded and confirmed that it was Irma ! While on the subject of Irma, I got the shots from Ewa Beach yesterday, and that also was Irma.

Lesley called at 1056 to report Right Spot in her right spot, at Turtle Bay .

Dera called at 1438 with the report of an animal at Magic Island. Since Marilyn was in town I asked her to try to get an ID. As I was speaking with Karen Rohter who was on scene, at 1533, Marilyn arrived and the Rocky ID was confirmed. I was shocked when I saw Marilyn's photos. I just assumed that Rocky was at her usual spot just beyond the barriers, but lo and behold she was on a ramp on the back side of the breakwater, that I had no clue even existed. I'm surprised anybody even knew she was there.

Team Kenyon did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and brought back news of Ka'ena, Kiko, and BG at the end of the world.
