12/17/2020 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Melody and Team T&D

Team T&D hiked Ka'ena and met up with Lesley at the point. They only spotted two critters today. They had RW02 PvKauai and a little further down was RG40 Holokai.  In addition to seeing the seals they attempted to save a unicorn fish (Kala). They saw it flopping on the reef, after a few attempts of putting it back in the ocean it kept washing up and unfortunately died. They tried to find any fishermen to pass it onto but no luck, so the Kala went back to the ocean to become food for the others.

Team Billand started their day waiting for seals at the outfall. Finally at 7 am Kalani RN14 was seen foraging. There were two seals fighting in the area but they could not be identified so they are reported as U/U.

Team Billand watched four critters in the bay. They all foraged for the entire day, its a wonder they can

still float. There was Nalu R3CX, RH48 Lei Ola, RL20 Kalua and RN44. But after a very long discouraging day, they found RN44 had hauled out on the rocks. He is big, fat and green. He scooted inland to get a good spot for the night. The other three were still foraging.

Team Billand headed over to tracks where the zoo continues. All the people getting up close to the seals so they can get their photo op and post on social media. The first victim today was R407. When Team Billand spotted him they immediately called the hotline. Next they found RN14 Kalani and then RL12 Aukai. PEople kept walking up close so Team Billand ran to get a sign that was off in the distance. As they were setting it up one guy was talking crap. They didn't engage, just let the hotline know and left. From another location they watched both seals depart.

Late afternoon Team Billand got a call the people were gathering around a seal at KoOlina, so off they went. When they arrived they could hear the life guard telling people to step away and give the seal some space. Team Billand spoke talked with security and let them know to call it into the hotine. Team Billand also spoke with the life guard to thank them for moving folks away. The critter at the lagoon was RH92 Nalani female from Kauai. She hasn't been around for a while.

Melody got word that Kaiwi was in town and since she was already in the are she stopped by to check. Kaiwi RK96 was in her favorite spot. She was a little more active but still staying close to the wall. After Melody was there for a bit a volunteer came by. There were lots of people on the beach, most are regulars and very familiar with Kaiwi, so they were respectful and gave her space to rest.
