6/30/2016 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi&PO4@AD, Kala&Kekoa@Rabbit Island, DB, RI37@Kuilima Cove, TB, Karen Turner, RIP&RL42@Makua Cliffs, Team Billand

At 0530 we found Kaiwi&PO4) in the shallows west of the rocks they had been at yesterday , but still within the zone. At 0823 they would move back to their tide pool, and at 0832 would haul out the sand above the tide pool. They were still there when I was relieved.

At 1200 I found Kala (RH76) out on the left end rock flats , and Kekoa (RK72) at the far left end of the beach. They would remain there for the entire observation period.

At 1337 Team Billand reported RIP (RR70) & RL42 together at Makua Cliffs.

Karen Turner checked in at 1323 with a shot of RI37 at Kuilima Cove, Turtle Bay.

HMMA Update from June 29th

At 0737 a report was made about a seal at White Plains Beach. The seal was ID'ed as Rocky (RH58) by natural bleach mark and scars. Warren responded and stated the seal may have overnighted. At 1002 Warren checked in again reporting Rocky's departure. Diane checked in from the Mokuleia pup site at 1032 with a report of a boat that appeared to be run aground. Nihoa was observed vocalizing at the boat. There were no signs of people aboard the boat. A series of calls came in with the same report. Diane checked in again at 1046, a few men arrived and started to push the boat back into the water. Nihoa (R912) and pup were about 25-35 feet away from the boat while the men were working to get the boat off the shoreline. The men got the boat off shore quickly. By 1054 the boat was headed back out to sea. Nihoa and pup continued their day.

Carola checked in via email after her late afternoon shift, She found Nihoa and pup snoozing in the center water side of SPZ. The pup was observed nursing and all appeared well.

happy to know it all worked out...

6/29/2016 Nihoa and PO3 Drama-rama

Aloha Good People

At 10:30 this morning I got a text from a Lauray and Kelly who were out at Mokuleia combing the beach for shells.... Lauray sent the following pictures saying this was potentially a bad situation.
I told her to call the hotline and report it and asked if there were any volunteers around....
While I was waiting for the response I forwarded the information to Diane G (who I thought MIGHT be out at the site)....

Okay... fast forward... Lauray and Kelly were on the opposite side of the SPZ than Diane.  Nihoa and PO3 were outside the SPZ....  This boat was there with a huge net hanging off the side... Nihoa was spending a lot of time barking and gesturing towards the boat.... so Miss Kelly snuck around the rear of the boat and moved it away from the Mom and pup ( YEA! Kelly).... In the meantime the owner of the boat showed up and explained there had been an emergency and he had to come to shore quickly.  In the end.... Mom and Pup are safe.... Boat and Owner are back to sea.... Kelly made a heroic effort... Lauray and Diane texted back all is calm....   LOL  this is what I know, there may be more to the story I don't know.... but it had to be nerve racking....

Having said  that I read the HMMA update of the dog incident yesterday.... Holy Hannah what a crazy couple of days!

6/29/2016 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi&PO4@AD, Kekoa,Aukai&Kala@Rabbit Island, Rocky@White Plains, RIP&RL42@Makua Cliffs

At 0530 we found Kaiwi&PO4(D#14) in their favorite tide pool. They were still there when I departed at 0645.

I met NOAA personnel at Makai Pier at 0702, and advised them of the Rabbit Island cast, prior to the vaccination mission to RI. The cast would prove to be Aukai (RL12)&Kekoa(RK72) together, left of 1BS, and Kala (RH76) out on the left rock flats. Their intent ,as I understand it, was to vaccinate Kekoa, however Murphy’s Law was alive and well this morning. Kekoa , horny male that he is, had been hassling Aukai, causing her to move toward the water line. She had finally had enough and entered the water, with Kekoa close behind. Unfortunately, that occurred just as the NOAA folk were advancing for the stick. NOAA personnel hung around watching them cavort off shore. They finally aborted the mission at 1000. Murphy’s Law was crueler still. As they were boarding the boat for the trip back at 1012, Kekoa hauled hauled out to join Kala. Since all phones were packed in dry bags for the trip back, Tracy didn’t get my message until they were back. Murphy sux !

Much Mahalos to Tracy for her shots of the RI cast today.

Team Billand checked in at 0723 with the report of Rocky (RH59) on the Ewa Beach side of the east end, White Plains perimeter fence. She would depart at 0952.

I’m going to take a chance and not put one of my sad little birthday cake shots in da’ blog. Today is a Happy 6th to Ua Malie (RT10), but based on the awesome cake that the TB aunties sent for Holokai, I’m figurin’ that Ua might get something a little better than I can do. Hopefully, I figured right. Happy Birthday girl !!

No cake showed up so I found this one on the internet... we can't let Ua Malie go without her cake!

HMMA Update from June 29th

The morning began with a call from Warren at 0530 reporting Rocky (RH58) at White Plains Beach. She was ID'ed by the scar over her left eye and natural bleach on her left fore flipper. Rocky may have overnighted. At 0906 HPD called with a report of a seal in Kaaawa. North Sector Manager Don responded but found no seal present. Another call came in at 0906 from Carola at the Mokuleia pup site. She reported that Nihoa (R912) and pup were not in the SPZ when she arrived for her shift at 0800. Mom and pup hauled out about 2/10 of a mile to the east. Carola checked back in at 1300 with a report of a seal and dog interaction. Kathleen was on duty when she saw a woman walking her dog along the beach unleashed. The dog approached Nihoa while she was outside of the SPZ. Based on the observations made by volunteers it is believed that Nihoa bit the dog. There were no apparent injuries to Nihoa and pup and it is unknown if the dog has suffered any injuries.

As a reminder please keep all dogs on a leash. Monk seals can injure dogs if they feel threatened or are attacked. Contact between seals and dogs may transmit diseases that can be dangerous to both the dog and the entire seal population.

6/2/2016 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi&PO4@AD, Kekoa,Kala&Aukai@Rabbit Island, Kolohe@Lanai Lookout, Nihoa&PO3@Mokuleia

At 0530 Kaiwi&PO4 (D#13) were in their tide pool. They would haul out and move up for a snooze and a feed, during my early morning session. In talks with Karen R., it sounds like they did a water session and then hauled out to the rocks at would have been the west end of the fence line, had not Jon move the west end yesterday. As it worked out they were well away from the west end, and that is where they were when I got back for the 1-4, snoozin’ and feedin’ again .

When I go to Makai Pier for my Rabbit Island fix, I found Aukai (RL12) left of 1BS, and Kekoa (RK72, right of 3BS. He would enter the water and haul out to the left rock flats at 0903. He galumphed across the flats and lo and behold Kala (RH76) appeared out of a tide pool in his path. I’d had no idea she was there until Kekoa found her for me. Kekoa would depart the flats and at 1017 hauled out to join Aukai, left of 1BS.

At 1120 I found what would prove to be Kolohe (RW22) once again on the Lanai Lookout Flats.

Team Billand called at 0800 with the report of Nihoa (R912)&PO3 at Mokuleia.
