Jack at the Bay began my day at 0555 with a call advising that he'd found RA36 on his 0520 beach check at Hanauma Bay. He had overnighted and was right where he'd been last night. When I arrived at 0614 I found the little dude awake and alert, and thinking about departing. I began putting up the cordon, but by 0635 he was moving down, and at 0648 he was in the water. I watched him swim out the "backdoor channel" and lost him on the outside. I picked up the stuff, and continued the adventure, heading for Spitting Cave.
As a side note to the HB story, Jack called at around 0800 to advise that a snorkeler had reported swimming with "L12" near the Witches Brew area. L12 is little Aukai (RL12) from Rabbit Island. She was not seen again today.
While I was at HB, Kimo called at 0710 with the report of an animal at Spitting Cave. He would confirm the Kaiwi (RK96) ID at 0730.
I arrived at SC at 0732, and no sooner sat down above the big rock, that in swims RA36 from around the point , coming in from HB. He and Kaiwi began an exhausting 1 1/2 hour nonstop play session (that was exhausting to Kimo and I, not the kids). Kimo would later report that RA36 had departed at 0853, and that Kaiwi remained.
Rabbit Island observations were totally out of the question in the pouring conditions, but I did hang out in my car at the pier, hoping for possible windows of opportunity. In that way I found Kolohe (RW22) and Duke (RA12) together on the water front rocks of Rocky Right Beach at 1125, and finally found Sadie & Pup (RB12) (D#11) in the Morning Glory directly fronting 1BS. As soon as I got the IDs I was outta' there.
Barbara will have to fill in the details , but at around 0645 the Billands called to advise that they had been called to Ewa Beach by one of their fishermen posse, and they and others watching two seals in an off shore lay net. There was some level of entanglement, but the two animals did extricate themselves. Pleas for help to NOAA and DOCARE were to no avail and so a diver (Robert) that was on the scene swam out and retrieved the net. In it were found a turtle, a shark and an Uhu ). The turtle was still alive, the shark & Uhu were not. There were also two large holes in the net (from the seals ????). It was said to be 200 ft + long, and totally illegal. Some hours later a DOCARE Officer did get the net from the Billands. These nets continue to be a nightmare. Without timely enforcement and removal of these nets, they will continue to be a disaster just waiting to happen.
At 0916 Team Billand reported the arrival of Pohaku (RO28) at Paradise Cove. It sounded like Linda and associates had their hands full with the adoring hordes, even on these horrible conditions.
At 0930 the Billands reported Kermit (R012) foraging off shore of the Nimitz Jetty. He would finally haul out fronting #1945, Nimitz Cottages, at 1203. He was gone on their 1445 recheck.
At 1045 the Billands reported the arrival of RIP (RR70) fronting #1707, White Plains.
At 1516 they reported the arrival of M&M (R020) to join RIP at #1707.
