The day began bright and early
as ususal, but it would be 1047 before I found my first critter. It would would
prove to be Buster (RV08) on the beach at the Waimanalo end of Left Point Beach,
on Rabbit Island. Though photos don't pick it up, his N21 bleach was clearly
visible.
Posse
member Zeeny Mian called at 1040 with the report of Kaiwi (RK96) at Lania
Lookout. I checked her at 1140, and found her in a small nook, sightly more in
the inlet than her usual spot, probably tide related. Posse member Teri
advised that Kaiwi had departed, with the rising tide, at approximately 1553.
Diane
Gabriel called with the report of Irma (R010) near lifeguard stand 2E in
Waikiki. This is day #3 of her Waikiki tour package. A 1900 email from Colleen
advised that Irma was still there. Todd is attending to her.
At 0825 Team Billand checked
in with the report of M&M (R020) at Guard Rails, Maili.
At 0957 2AW was the next
Billand find at Tracks.
Next came Kermit (R012) on
the Billand list, fronting #1705 at Nimitz Cottages.
Unfortunately, the Billands next
find was a total Bummer. At 1227 they found Sharkbite (T15M) fronting 1706,
White Plains with a fish hook, leader and considerable line attached. NOAA was
notified and a response was begun. Team Billand called at 1547 to advise that
T15M had been successfully captured. A lot of line and the leader was removed
and the ol' dude was caged and is in route to the Aquarium for X-rays. An 1858
conversation with Dera, brought word that T15M has a fish hook, approximate 3 ft
down his esophagus. More X-rays are being taken at this time, and a plan will be
formulated.
An email
from State Off Shore Islands Biologist , Amarisa Marie advised that she has
received the New & Improved Rabbit Island signs, and that they would
hopefully get them installed next week. Stay tuned fans !
In the Yesterday's News
deparment, Kelly Girl forwarded new photos from Josh of what has proven to be
Right Spot (R016) at the Kahuku on 5-6-12. Tanx Eh, to Kelly and Josh. Ya' Done

A 1640 call from Barbara
brought news that she had spoken with Eileen, who reported that Kekoa (RK72) and
Makaiwi (R4DF) were at the Reef Runway today. She also reported that T21M had
been there yesterday.

It was a very tuff day to see this old seal with a line of cable coming out of his mouth, then all that fishing line over his body, his hind flippers. The hours we waited for NOAA to respond and rescue were agnonizing, helpless, painful.
Watching the NOAA team, having help from our Cabin Volunteers, Our Plains Lifeguards were extraordinary and so appreciated.
Sharkbite put up a fight, leaping high in the air, but NOAA Rescue Team kept at it, getting him into the cage...what amazing men and women with such courage and persistance.
God bless you all and thank you so much for being there for this OLD DUDE...Sharkbite. He has survived two sharkbites, and recently two hookings. Hope with my soul, he survives MANS WORK.
Prayers to Sharkbite...our beloved elder seal. B
