8/27/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Aukai & RN14, Ka'ale, Kekoa, and Rabbit Island Critters

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Gayle, & Mrs. Whisperer. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Team Billand captured a budding romance between RN14 and Aukai.
They first spotted a seal hauling up on shore at Nanakuli, they were able to ID Aukai and spent sometime talking to the kids and adults who were all too happy to see the seal. RN14 appeared hauled out next to Aukai. They both were in the water after some initial barks and slaps.  Seems we have a little romance between the two playing and tolling around together. ( Kind of like the old Kermit and Irma days).  Not sure what time but both eventually left heading west. Hotline was called twice.

Team Billand's next stop was at Maili, they waited patiently for RN14  and sure enough he came right in and just stayed on the rocks. He was there on their noon check and was still there at 3:00 pm.

While at Maili the found a seal doing 6 min dives, initially couldn't get an ID. They stay for a couple of hours and was able to determine Kekoa Alii RK72. Green muzzle, bumps on left side of body, scar on right side of face.  Team Billand left at 3:30 pm.

Lastly, Team Billand found Ka'ale RH32 stayed long enough to make an ID and they had to leave.

Gayle sent pictures of Rabbit Island with two animals.

In the meantime Mrs. Whisperer spent a couple of hours on the pier checking out Rabbit Island.  Marilyn spotted 4 seals over time.  First two unidentified males both with tags about 60 ft east of the 3rd blue sign. One of the seal "might" be Kainoa due to a shadow of a transmitter/camera patch on his shoulder.  Shortly after she spotted another seal at the rocky right beach noted as a juvenile.  Lastly she spotted a seal behind the rock at the left point beach. The animal was too large and too long to be Aka.

8/26/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Pohaku (RO28), Kekoa (RK72), RN14, Ka'ena (RO40), Squinty (R330), and Kolohe (RW22)

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Mrs. Whisper, Gayle and Diver Pal Paul.  We got some cool underwater video of Kolohe cruising around Lanai Lookout.

Team Billand began the day by finding Pohaku RO28 out at the plains, where it looks like she might have spent the night. She was in a quiet spot no one there to disturb her.

Their next find was Kekoa initial he was alone at Maili. He was resting to the right of the rocks and would later be joined by RN14, who approached cautiously.  Both boys were still there past 1:00 pm.

Mrs. Whisperer did the Ka'ena Point Trek solo from the Mokuleia side. At 08:12 am she found Squinty (R330) at 10 min beach and he remained there on her way out.  R330 was ID'd by line scar on head and scare above the LFF, male belly with several scars and no tags.

Initially there were no seal at Ka'ena Point but at 09:40 am she spotted a HMS coming in from the rocks outside the main pool.  RO40 was ID'd by chipped tag, N9 applied bleach, pit scar on back and scar on forehead.

Gayle spotted 3 U/Us on Rabbit Island.... once again no possible ID, just a guess that maybe they might be Kawena, RG32 and Aka.... but again just a guess.

Most exciting is was email from diver pal Paul with some underwater footage of Kolohe ID'd by his cue ball bleach mark. '

8/25/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Ka'ale (RH32), Kekoa (RK72), Ua Malie (RT10) & PO4.

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Posse pals Gayle, Tammy and Vicki. Thank you all for being out there today!

Team Billand had to real life things to do today so they only spent a little time out on beaches. They found two seal today. Early morning they found Ka'ale (RH32) . They rechecked in the afternoon and Ka'ale was still there alone this time in the watering hole.

Their second find of the day was Kekoa Alii (RK72), he was alone snoozing. He remained alone.

Both Posse Vicki & Tammy were at Turtle Bay today, separately  with Ua Malie and PO4. Great shots of Momma and pup and some solo shots of pup getting so big!

Gayle sent a couple of shots of Rabbit Island showing two smaller seals as unknowns ( we can only guess... Gayle thinks maybe Aka and Kawena).

And Gayle's last find and I quote "Sardine in a Can"  LOL!  She found right Spot in a tide pool and it looks like she barely fits. Actually pretty good camouflage. Thank you Gayle I had a good laugh!
