09/02/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Melody, Team T&D, and Team R&B.💕

Team T&D hiked to the point today with Lesley.  Their first find was Lina RL98 on her beach. Her molt is coming along. Next critter was Kami RL74. While trying to ID Kami they noticed another seal near her hidden behind a rock. It was old man Benny RE74.  Tide was coming up and washing over Benny, he got up and left.

Once they hiked out to the point they found Kala RH76. Soon after Benny showed up and tried to get got to Kala. She ignored him and Benny left.  Their last find was Ka'ena RO40.

Team R&B were out early and initially did not find any critters at all.   Finally at another location they

saw a big rock that was really a seal.  They were able to ID RW22 Kolohe who was sleeping peacefully.  They couldn't get a good look at his snout to see if it's improved.  They couldn't stay so they made a quick zone out of sticks and found three signs to put out.  Team R&B talked to a curious man about Kolohe and he thanked them for all that they are trying to do.  I totally agree with him!  Team R&B had to cut their day short.

Meanwhile in yesterdays' news Melody sent an update from her day. She had met up with Team R&B on a west side beach where they saw Nalu R3CX and Lefty RG28. Nalu didn't stay long, but Melody captured him foraging and possibly picking up a tako on his way out. 

After Team R&B had to leave, she stayed to watch over Lefty. He got tired of the waves washing over him and eventually swam off.  He didn't go far he hauled out down a ways on the beach. 

Melody left after lunch and on her way home she got a call that Kaiwi RK96 was in Waikiki. So she went down to check on the girl. She stayed for a couple of hours and then headed out. Always nice seeing her, especially in her new coat.

09/01/2021 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team R&B arrived at Pokai Bay early morning and saw lots of fishing boats tossing chum to catch Halalu. There was RL20 foraging and they spotted a seal swimming by him. The other seal disappeared befor they could get any pictures or and ID.   Later in the day when they checked there were fewer fishermen out and RL20 Kalua was snuggled in the rocks. They were happy and relieved he was out of the water.  They could see a small hook embedded in his chest to the right side. Doesn't look to be a problem its such a small hook.  As Team R&B was walking away two boys went up to the seals. The smaller boy was innocent, but the older one began barking noised at RL20 who barked back. Team R&B paused and took some photos. The smaller boy convinced the bigger boy to stop and they left the area. RL20 remained on the rocks.

Team R&B got word from a friend who said there were two seals at tracks. They hurried over and in the process of arriving they got a text from Melody that RG28 Lefty was at tracks.  When Team R&B arrived they saw another seal on shore, R3CX Nalu on shore.   They hurried to put up a make-shift SRA.  

They went over to the lot area and that is where Lefty RG28 was snoozing with just one sign.  They found two other signs that are kept at the site and put them out. At that point they saw Melody walking towards them and pointing at Nalu. R3CX took off and was heading to RG28's spot.  Team R&B had an appointment and needed to leave, Melody remained.  When they returned later they saw one seal from afar. It looked to be lefty at the bath house and there were no signs.

Team R&B went to check other west side locations and at yoks at the 3rd dip high up on shore they could see a large adult snoozing. They were too far away to get any kind of ID, so the seal was reported as an U/A.

Further down they noticed a seal snoozing on shore (Makua area). They were happy to find the lovely RL42 Leia.  She was alone resting peacefully.

09/01/2021 (part 2) Wednesday Lesley's Ka'ena Update

It was a beautiful sunrise, while watching it a pod of dolphins cruised by on their way to the North Shore.

I got to see and document 6 HMSeals:

RL98 Lina overnighted and spent the day on the beach. Her molt is 5%

RL74 Kami & RP30 Puka were playing in the water with the same rod Diane and I documented him playing with 2 weeks ago. They later hauled out and settled down. On my way back I checked on them. Puka had left and Kami was sleeping away.

RO40 Ka'ena was sleeping on a reef, but waves of rising tide spooked him. I was able to get some good documentation of his muzzle. His 2 new wounds are drying up well.

RJ40 'E'ena was doing the hippo in a pool. Her nickname 'E'ena means skittish in Hawaiian (shy, timid, untamed)

RH76 Kala is enjoying her stay. She was in shallow water of tide pool doing the hippo
