This Saturday Laie Beach - Hawaiian Ceremony - neonate sperm whale

On May 30, 2011, a live neonate sperm whale stranded on the shores of Laie. Many beach goers and members of the community were very concerned and played a big role in reporting information and assisting with the response. Unfortunately the whale had been separated from its mother and had no chance of survival. It passed after several hours struggling on the beach.

A Hawaiian ceremony and spreading of ashes will be held for this whale at Laie Beach Park:
 Saturday November 12 at 4pm

We would like to invite all who were involved or who are interested in participating and learning about the cultural aspect of our Marine Mammal Response Program. Feel free to extend this invitation as we would like to encourage a greater understanding of marine mammal strandings and the importance of these animals in Hawaiian culture.

(As a courtesy to Hawaiian cultural practices we ask that photographs not be taken during the ceremony)
