July 27, 2026 Monday's Dailies

There was not a lot happening in the seal search but they did find dolphins. They were far out and jumping. It was a little challenging to keep track. But needless to say they were awesome.

All of a sudden they heard a snort. It was a seal and turned out to be RG32. They were happy to see him in that hit had been a long time. He was alert looked around rolled over and then took off towards KoOlina.

July 26. 2026 Sunday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island for a short time from 12:34 to 1:14 pm. When she arrived there were only two seals on island but then a few others hauled out for a total of six seals.

RH76 Kala and PO13 hauled out of the LPB channel at 12:49 pm and moved up the beach before going into snooze mode. Marilyn did not see any nursing during her short viewing session. Both mom and pup seem healthy, the pup is putting on pounds.

At 1:01 pm Weaner Unknown 1 hauled out on the Middle Cliff side of the 3BS: weaner size, at least and probably three tags, no info on tags or sex.

When Marilyn first arrived there were only two seals on the SRI side of the 3BS:

Adult Female adult size, old coat with lots of green, female belly and two red tags.

Nearby was an Adult Unknown: adult size, older coat with light ventral, two tags.

At 12:59 pm, WU2 hauled out on the 3BS of the AF and AU: weaner size, at least two tags, no info on sex.

In yesterday's news Team R&B found RL20 Kalua on the side. He was alone resting against the rocks. When the waves came in he rolled into the shallows and left the area.

Today on their way to an appointment they got word of a seal at plains. They went to check and found KG54 Huakai on shore with her new coat.

July 25, 2026 Saturday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed rabbit island from 12:55 to 2:25 pm and there were five seals seen during that time. 

In middle of LPB were RH76 Kala and her pup PO13. They have finally moved off the rock flats. PO13 is 3 weeks old today. Mom and pup both seem to be doing fine, the pup nursed and then went into snooze mode.

At Middle Cliff was a seal labeled as Weaner/Juvenile Unknown. Marilyn just could not decide on the size. The W/JU may have a wound on its forehead, or mark from over turning rocks. Marilyn could see at least tow tags, no info on sex.

Out near the 3BS were two seals:

Sub-adult Male: sub-adult size, light male belly and two red tags. This seal has an older coat with some green.

Nearby was an Adult Unknown: small adult size, older coat, not sure about sex or tags.

July 25, 2026 News from July 23rd

From Marilyn: 

I viewed Rabbit (Manana) Island from Makai Pier from 10:32 am to 12:11 pm. It was mostly sunny with moderate winds. I no longer have access to the Makai Pier lanai because of structural problems so I viewed from next to the container on the Lanikai end of the main pier building. This is really not an ideal viewing location because it's low and I have to stand in the sun.

The NOAA-DOFAW-DLNR team was on the island from 11:06 am to 12:06 pm and landed near the 1BS.

There were 10 or 11 HMS spotted on the island during my viewing session and I think 11.

Out on the rock flats at the Lanikai end of the island was RH76 Kala. I did not knowingly see her pup, PO13, but I suspect it was on the cliff side of her.

At about 10:47 am, I saw what I believe was a weaner haul out and and then move up to RH76 and then behind her. This seal was too big to be a less than 3-week-old nursing pup (PO13). Based on the process of elimination, I think this was RV68. The other three recent weaners were all between the 3BS and SRI.

Between Middle Cliff and SRI there were 8 seals (initially 7, but then the SU arrived while the team was on island).

On the 3BS side of Middle Cliff was RV70 (male): weaner size, light male belly, two red tags.

Closer to the 3BS was RU70: small juvenile size, old coat with lots of green, female belly, two red tags. She seems awfully small.

Just SRI side of the 3BS was a group of three seals. 

RU38: very large for a juvenile, recently molted, female belly and two red tags. 

Then there were two sub-adult to adult seals for which I did not get the IDs from Mark, one female and one male. 

Further in the SRI direction was RV50: weaner size, female belly, 3 tags. Mark applied a N81 bleach on her.

What I think was a Sub-adult Unknown (SU) hauled out between RV50 and PO10 at 10:48 am. It left as the team approached and was followed by one of the seals that had been in the group of three.

The last seal seen and closest to the SRI was weaner PO10, who is now RV52. She is female which I thought, but had been unable to confirm. She of course was the seal farthest away from where the tagging team landed. She entered the water after being tagged and later, after the tagging team was gone, she hauled out from the SRI channel.

July 24, 2026 Friday's Dailies

Their first find today was at plains. Once again RT06 Marvin was alone on shore today. They noted there were lots of people on shore today, in pavilions, in the water, and  in the surf. The waves were big today. A lot of people got swept out to the right, which was good for RT06. He was enjoying his Siesta in his a zone set up for him.

They headed over to yoks hoping to find more seals, but there were
none. The water was going over the road in a few spots even in Makaha.

While out in the area Team R&B watched the brave locals surf the big waves.  Not to mention watching the seals what they do best.
