12/26/2020 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Marilyn, Melody and Team Billand. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Marilyn only spent about a half hour at the pier because high wind and blowing rain conditions were awful. There were four seals on island today.

Up by vegetation near the 3BS were two seals. UJ1, unknown juvenile to subadult size, light belly, gender or tags were not visible. UJ2 unknown juvenile size, newer coat, again not sure about sex or tags. Neither of these critters changed positions during her brief observation.

On RRB rock flats were two seals. USA unknown, sub adult size, light gray belly, not sure about sex or

tags.  UA, unknown adult size, old coat, not sure about sex or tags. The UA went over to the USA and then continued in the Lanikai direction and entered the water.

Melody received a text late morning that Rocky was at one of her favorite beaches. As soon as Melody arrived she ID'd her and called the hotline. Because of todays weather conditions the beach was empty of people. Rocky had the entire beach to herself with the exception of a couple of residents and Melody. Rocky stayed up on the beach and snoozed for a few hours then decided to make her way towards the water.  As there was a break in the weather a few more folks arrived giving Melody the opportunity to do some outreach. Rocky spend a couple more hours at the waterline and was still there when Melody left at sunset.  Melody got word this evening that Rocky made her way back up the beach and hunker down for the evening.

Team Billand was at the outfall at 8:30 and found Ka'ale RH32 with bosom buddy RN14 Kalani. They were both foraging for a bit but then RN14 disappeared. They noticed Kalani had hauled out at tracks. When he landed the kids on the beach went up to him getting really close by his face. Team Billand called the hotline to report.

At 10:30 Team Billand was at the bay. They found Aukai RL12 foraging with R3CX Nalu. She never landed while they were there, weather conditions were awful.  RN44 hauled out on the rocks to the left. He is looking quite green. About 12 people came to play in the pond and jump off the rocks. They were all very respectful the whole time and did not bother RN44. He was alert but settled in. They saw Lei Ola TH48 foraging the entire time, wonder if she's eating for two? ( just my thought no crediable information that would say so.)  Of course the kid RL20 Kalua was out there foraging keeping up with the grownups.

At 2:15 Team Billand went to another west side location. There they found RH76 Kala, she was alone snoozing in the chilly winds. She would flex her flippers for the awaited tag shot. She is a big girl looking healthy resting peacefully.
