12/19/2020 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Team Billand and Marilyn. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Marilyn observed Rabbit Island from about 11:40 to 2 pm. There were five seals on island today. On LPB there was an UAM unknown adult size, medium gray male belly with a newer coat. Marilyn was not able to see if there there tags. Just after 12 he headed for the water.

There were two seals by the 3BS. UAF unknown adult to subadult

size, mottled female belly and two tags. Nearby was an UM, medium weaner size, no tags, older coat with lots of green on the ventral surface. This might be the same green male weaner she sees with regularity. Marilyn suspects it could be PO1 born in February 2020.

Shortly after the UAM entered the water, Marilyn became aware of another small seal on LPB. This critter was not wet, so he could have been hiding. Marilyn was able to ID'd L9 a male weaner born on Molokai in 2020. Thankfully his applied bleach was visible.

Just before 1 pm Marilyn became aware of an adult size seal on the far side of RRB. This critter reported as a UU but "could" have been the UAM from earlier.

Team Billand arrived at a west side beach and spotted a seal snoozing alone on shore. They made a makeshift zone since it was the weekend and people were coming to the beach. This seal was ID'd as R407 Kawika. Team Billand stuck around and educated people as they arrived. They left to check other locations.

At 9:20 they spotted Kaale RH32 foraging at the outfall and then he was gone. About 15 minutes later they see Kaale at the same beach as Kawika R407. Then soon to arrive RN14 Kalani. Both Kaale and Kalani galumphed up to Kawika had a few words and they all settled in.  Team Billand called the hotline.

Team Billand arrived at the bay and spotted the seals foraging and fighting. They heard a noise thinking

it was the small blow hole but no it was three seals down below playing. There was the usual suspects, RL20 Kalua, RN44, R3CX Nalu and Lei Ola RH48. Later RN44 landed on the rocks and was hidden from view.

Team Billand found RH76 Kala at another west side location. She was alone near seal inlet resting in the sun. There wasn't any people around to bother her. She is getting bigger and bigger. Finally she was getting resting.

Lastly they went back to check on the three amigos. All three boys were still there and a volunteer was on site and signs were out.
