12/22/2020 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and  Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team Billand found Kawika R407 hauled out at a beach on the west side. There were plenty people at the beach so they called the hotline just after 8 am.

About 30 minutes later they saw Kalani RN14 who came from the outfall area cruising by the shore. He ended up hauling out by Kawika, they had a few words. Then both moved up when they were hit by a good wave.  Team Billand called the hotline again.

Lots of people were out and about until three women with board came and walked right in front of the

seals. R407 Kawika  postured and looked up at the women. Team Billand spoke with one of them and asked them to walk around to enter the water. She did and the seals remained. On their recheck at 2:30 there wasn't any sign of volunteers, or signs. However there were lots of folks walking up to the seals taking pictures. Its frustrating for sure.

Team Billand arrived at the bay just before 11 am. They spotted a seal hauling up and ID'd Lei Ola RH48. She is looking quite large, no wonder with all her foraging in the bay.  In the bay was two more seals. It took a bit of patience with the waves and choppy water. Finally they figured out RN44 and RL20 Kalua.

After leaving the bay they headed over to another west side location. Just before 3:30 they saw RG28 Lefty alone snoozing on lower rocks. RH76 Kala was pretty much hidden, but persistence paid off and they got the tag shot.  And then there was RL70 Leina mid rocks across from Kala snoozing. She was more cooperative and showed her tags. She's a cutie, with a nice white belly and thankfully no hooks ot lines.

To icing to the cake Team Billand spotted a couple whales!
