12/23/2020 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Marilyn.

Marilyn observed Rabbit Island this afternoon from 1:45 to 3 pm. Seems most of the critters have left for the holiday. While she was setting up the scope she briefly saw a juvenile and a weaner just entering the water between the 3BS and SRI. She managed to get a blurry photo. She did see the seal interacting for a short time and then lost sight of them.

Soon after that she saw people on a sail/power boat pointing in the water. She did see a seal appearing to follow the boat, but couldn't get a pic.

There was an unknown adult size, male belly (UAM) behind the rocks next to SRI. Marilyn only saw

him briefly and then he either moved further behind the rocks or went into the water.

Team Billand spent a few hours at the outfall this morning watching three critters foraging. Ka'ale was the first one they ID'd. They did see RL12 Aukai and at times she and Kaale were fighting. Ka'ale would forage, fight, disappear and return to eat some more.  Aukai was smooth while foraging, she barely showed her tags. She spends time hanging out on the surface and then smoothly dove down.

During their first visit to the bay they saw RL20 Kalua foraging. Nalu R3CX was foraging by the jetty. LEi Ola RH48 was foraging near jetty and then further out.

On their second visit to the bay they saw two seals had landed. At first look they thought they were rocks, but nope there were two seals on shore by the lifeguard. There was Aukai RL12 and Nalu R3CX were agitated, moving around getting annoyed at a man clapping his hands at them. There was a woman sitting right near them, preparing food for her daughter who kept running into the zone.  Team Billand noted Aukai has a cookie wound on the left side of her butt.

Also on the last visit to the bay they spotted a little seal, until they saw him look up to them on the rocks. They were shocked and happy to see little N4 Kai. He was out there with the rest of them fighting in the ocean side of the jetty.  Along with Kai N4 they spotted N44 fighting with Lei Ola as usual. They were coming in by the rocks putting on show with lots of splashing.
